Discussion Is it right time for broadcasters to launch 4K TV channels?

Should broadcasters start offering 4K channels now in 2020?

We are a unique country. Most of us have skipped the 3rd generation of mobile network. We directly upgraded from 2G to 4G. Market is filled with affordable 4K TVs and boxes as compared to 2015 when we indeed had temporary 4K channels. No broadcasters till date has given us a full HD channel. Can they skip 1080p for 4K?

Do you think there is enough demand from viewers for 4K channels now? Or are we satisfied with 4K content from streaming services.

If you vote for Yes. Make sure to highlight which channels you want to enjoy in 4K.

Yes. As I mentioned in other thread, such a large country as ours, we need the broadcasters and DTH firms to push for new boundaries. Instead we are stuck with broadcasters pumping in SD channels and very few HD content. At this point, any new channel that's launched should be HD but look at Zee, they are about to launch 2 new SD channels. It's 2020 for godsake.

There are son many sports channels around the world that stream in 4K, Formula 1 for example would be amazing in 4K. Heck, we even had cricket being broadcasted at 4K at some point. That's what our own broadcasters and DTH firms should aim, Japan is on course for 8K content.

There are enough TVs that are sold that have 4K capabilities and there is enough bandwidth for many people here to stream 4K yet all those official OTT apps of Indian broadcasters barely have 4K content.

We need 4K and sports channels would be an ideal place to start.

Television industry has seen big change last year through tariff order and then this year also with amendments in that order. Broadcasters are telling that they may have to shutdown some channels. 4K might be need for some customers but I don't think that broadcasters will provide any 4K channel in India at least this year.
I am genuinely curious. Did any channel shut down even after the unprecedented earnings from customers directly in the last year?

Broadcasters as precautionary measure shut down before implementation of NTO. Ironically most channels shutting down post NTO are fta channels.

If they shut down even before NTO, then they aren't worth talking about.

Now that we are talking about this, a couple of questions for knowledgebase

1. How many TVs are there in India ?

2. How many of them are 4K ?

3. How many active HD set-top boxes are there ?

Indian television industry is seeing massive shift of viewers from TV to OTT.
To bring 4K channels. Networks have to prove the stability of market to get Elite advertising.
Most Indian viewers are intro Drama and comedy than to World , tour or 4K content. If available in OTT. Indians are smart . They will definitely see content in 4K but for few days to experience then change the quality to 760 or even 480 to save internet. So it's hard to tell how people will welcome 4K

DTH and cable is best for 4k, not OTT apps. High speed internet with a large cap is unavailable even in most parts of metro cities.

And everyone is into cricket. So, that is the best place to start.
