I read somewhere that Sony participated in IPL to increase bid price and create loss for Star. So if that's true, Sony is now harvesting what they sowed.

It was a closed auction; nobody knew the price of what the other parties would have bid. More over, Sony did want to retain the rights of IPL; why would they intentionally lose a property that has helped them grow tremendously for a decade?
