Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV among six licences issued by MIB in March

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) granted licences to six television channels in March, including Arnab Goswami’s ARG Outlier under the name Republic TV. The licence was for English and Hindi languages.
Republic TV received the licence on 1 March.

Of the six licences granted in March, four were non-news and two were news. Four licences were for uplinking while two were for downlinking.

Sony Pictures Networks India subsidiary Bangla Entertainment received a downlinking licence under the name Sony Aath. The licence is for Bangla and other Indian languages. It must be noted that Bangla Entertainment already has an uplinking licence under the name Aath, which is a hybrid Bengali entertainment channel. Most of the Sony channels are uplinked from Singapore.

Turner International received a downlinking licence to launch Cartoon Network HD. The Cartoon Network HD licence is for English and in due course Hindi. The company owns two SD kids channels, Pogo and Cartoon Network.

Movements Digital India got an uplinking licence to launch Tunes 6 Music in Hindi and other regional languages.

Surya Processed Food got two licences, a news licence (Surya Samachar) and a non-news licence (Surya Sagar Entertainment). The licences are for English, Hindi and other Indian languages.

The total permitted private satellite TV channels having valid permission in India stands at 888, as on 31 March. There are 496 non-news and current affairs channels, while the number of news and current affairs channels stands at 392.
