MIB drops AXN and AXN HD from permitted satellite TV channels repository

If English GEC can work in countries where internet penetration is high and speed is more stable , there r many more OTT platforms available and above all where TV subscription charges r almost equal to OTT combo subscription then why cannot English GEC channels perform well in India where internet penetration still is limited (more specifically broadband) and internet speeds r still not stable in many towns, villages, cities, OTT platforms do not offer all content available on TV and most importantly TV channels are much more affordable than OTT subscription.

Jio surely offered free mobile internet in initial few years but now there is a cost involved and watching content on mobile as compared to TV is not quite the same experience. TV Channels offer large screen experience, convenience to watch curated content and affordability which lack and apart from first thing latter two aren't offered incase of OTT. Even if u want to watch OTT content on big screen then u require smart box or tv which again most people cannot afford and even if some people opt for it then again internet costs/speed, OTT subscription charges r an issue.

DTH companies r offering hybrid boxes for a reason bcoz they know need for TV channels still remain high across audience types and genres.
Broadcasters Audience Research Council (BARC) India, said that the All India TV reach has dropped from a peak of 94% in 2018 to 82% in 2022.

According to Zenith SVP & National Head-Media Buying Ramsai Panchapakesan, the overall TV viewership, excluding news and sports, has seen a 12-14% dip in urban markets for 30+ TG.

There is a drop in viewership as seen across audiences ranging anywhere between 5 % and 10%. This is a combination of drop in reach as well as time spent. It's seen across genres including GEC, and regional but has been felt more acutely by the movie genre.

"Yes, it is true that there has been a drop in the ratings with the 30+ TG, however, what we fail to understand is the demographic reality of India. Nearly 65% of India’s population is below the age of 35 and 70% of this audience is below the age of 30. So with a shrinking 30+ story, it is bound to happen. We also conveniently forget that devices now are multifold and not just monopolistic to television when it comes to audiovisual," Sundaram said.

An entire generation of audiences have missed the TV bus in India and fast-tracked to digital consumption where the device could be anything, a mobile, a pad or a TV.

Buddy , i have already stated the above reason in the detailed explanation provided as to why English GEC chs r not performing well on TV but this is just one the reasons. Main reasons remains the fact that channels have not redsigned content strategy nor priced the channels properly to b able to reinvent and cater to emerging as well as evolved audience. Shift to OTT had happened only in minute section of the audience, largely people have disconnected their DTH or Cable connections or unsubscribed the channels bcoz they r not getting right kind of content at affordable pricing.

Broadcast Sector had not admitted till now that they did a mistake by increasing prices of channels by multiple times as compared to what they costed in Pre NTO era. They always blame TRAI for this but fact is NTO regulations have not let to increase in prices, it is the broadcasters who have themselves decided upon a wrong pricing policy. If they were confident of their content then they would have continued the old pricing and people would have happily subscribed to their channels thus providing monthly revenue to broadcasters. Pre NTO style functioning where broadcasters did upfront long term agreement with operators , got huge money in advance and operators got chs at lower price was surely good for broadcasters/operators but consumers had little choice and had to opt for DPO bouquet which had mix of channels. NTO has given consimers choice to opt for channels of their choice but broadcasters have designed bouquet / channel pricing in such a way that it has made the whole exercise futile. Even TRAI admits that they will address this "pervasive pricing" issue soon.

Also there is OTT churn happening these days and many people r not continuing with multiple OTT subscriptions bcoz of higher pricing/budget issues & all the hassle in searching for content. If people still opt for watching sports on TV Channels bcoz of internet streaming issues similarly for other genres too they prefer TV if it offers right curated content at affordable pricing. OTT will ofcourse co exist but in India TV channels will still hold large presence across genres if broadcasters adopt the correct path else this trend of DTH/Cable TV subscriber base going down will continue, those continuing will take minimal chs, many will shift to DD Free Dish and rest will go with OTT.

Netflix and other English OTT contents are main killer of English channels, young generation is enjoying on mobile without ads and if they are well off connecting thru broadband all English contents on TV thru Android box ,TV watching thru Set box slowly shifting to 40+ age housewifes or older generation males

AXN was way ahead of it's time. They use to provide shows along with US even before existence of SWP HD and Colors Infinity. Even had some good originals like The Apprentice Asia. They use to have reality shows of CBS which no streaming provider till date has. AXN was also the #1 channel most weeks on BARC's TV Ratings. It's Sony who take decisions without long term thinking. AXN was shutdown at a time when they were planning to merge with another network. But that didn't happen. They shut down the channel anyway. As much as we praise SET for being urban centric and not ratings hungry like other networks. SPN doesn't know how to cater to a niche audience. They shut down channel like Animax which was the only channel of it's genre. Excluded Sony BBC Earth with exclusive BBC content from cheaper bouquets. Dumped all the South movies on Sony Max ruined it too. Justice was not done to Sony Rox HD too.

Animax is the reason I became an anime fan. FMA and Inu Yasha were so amazing back then.

I was quite upset when they removed the channel.

Yes , agree one more reason as currently AXN and AXN HD license owned by KC Global media since 2020 when Sony sold the channels to them.

same here . only in 2020 Sony pictures network India sold AXN, Animax , one tv , gem tv channels in asia to kc global media . In 2017 the main reason why they decided to shut down Animax channel in India was because they wanted to launch their kids yay channel for which they didnt got permission from their int'l head for additional channel launch, so instead they ended up using Animax channel license to launch Sony yay. that too they decided to replace it suddenly with conference without prior announcement in news about thir new channel yay would be replacing Animax. in April they replaced with sony yay . otherwise they could have easily applied for another kids channel tv license and put animax as teen channel or converted Animax into hd channel .

they later added Animax after several months due to fans demand on sony liv in 2017 june/july till 2020 then was removed as it was not renewed.

some months back in 2017 they only announced about sony yay channel launch or they planning to launch another kids channel. way back in 2014 sony india mgmt planned to rebrand Animax india to AXN Beyond . against it Animax India fans fought through petitions , group , and working together with different cities talking to dth and cable operators to make animax available in more cable networks due to their efforts animax channel rebrand to axn beyond was cancelled and was available in most cable channels and in 2016 Animax even readded in Tata sky jan or feb only . it seems to be one of the reasons why they decided to keep the news about animax being replaced from yay news secret from Animax Indian fans. there used to be official Animax India community forum and Animax asia community forum was made by animax channel they advertised about forum in their channel . they later shut both forum in 2014/2015 . you could say community forum made by tv channel helped to gather animax fans in india from different cities together.

as per odd circumstances earlier the same channel which they forcefully shut down saying anime is niche audience and they would air shonen anime in sony yay soon. it is possible due Indian anime fans and Animax india fans as a tv channel brand fans . hope KC global media group understands indian fans do support anime and growing demand of anime in India relaunch their AXN and Animax channel in India in future.

KC has recently even appreciated anime fans from India, 1-2 weeks ago. They posted that in their story on Facebook and Instagram.
So if fans email them proper feedback, who knows KC can play master move by bringing Animax back in India.

Recently KC Global Media expanded Animax and Japanese content in Maldives and Hong Kong.
