CHENNAI: Over 200 members of the Chennai Metro DAS Cable TV Operators Association staged a protest in the city on Saturday against Arasu Cable TV corporation ( ACTV) for the steep hike in subscription coercion to buy set-top boxes without a digital license.
“Earlier, they charged `2,000 and now the online subscription charges have gone up to `8,000,” said B Karunanidhi, Association President. The protest was intended to draw the attention of the Chief Minister, he added.
Accusing the ACTV of overpricing and drastically increasing the lamp post rent, he said now they were being demanded to pay `34,400 from a mere `9,600 earlier. Officials have gone to the extent of cutting the wires complicating the problems, Krishnakumar, Association Secretary said.
Further, the operators are up in arms against ACTV officials coercing them to purchase digital set-top boxes even without a license from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The officials are also allowing some others to illegally use the connections availed by these operators and make the channels available to customers at a lower cost, Karunanidhi said. Other demands of the operators include raising the monthly subscription of `70 to match the TRAI’s standard rate of `150.
