The battle to obtain new pay-TV subscribers in Mexico already has a clear winner, and it isn't precisely the cable operators...

"Of the eight million new subscription television customers that Mexico will have by 2015, nearly seven million will go to DTH," forecast Javier Izquierdo, head of wholesale operations at Media Networks Latin America.

If corroborated, the projection would mark a drastic change of fortunes for the cable sector, which has historically been the country's main distribution platform for pay television. In early 2012, however, Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Commission (Cofetel) is expected to confirm that satellite television operators have now overtaken their old rivals.

A Telefónica group company, MNLA has developed a white label product that allows companies with or without previous experience in subscription television to launch their own DTH services. To do that, the company has deployed a satellite network with a footprint covering all of Latin America.

"We are essentially wholesale distributors of a DTH product that each operator can then rebrand and personalise," said Izquierdo, speaking during his presentation at the NexTV Latin America Summit 2011, held this week in Buenos Aires.

He added that DTH is solidifying its position as the number one pay-TV platform not only in Mexico but across the region. "In Latin America there are a series of deficiencies – especially with regards to terrestrial infrastructure – which make DTH the most appropriate option," he explained.

The white label product that MNLA offers has around 500 SD/HD TV channels that operators in the South American region can "pick and mix", while the Caribean region is covered with approximately 100 channels. The services are currently being used by some five million people across the region, served via 17 different operators.
