MUMBAI: Infotainment broadcaster Discovery Channel is all set to launch a new series, ‘Walking The Nile’ on 22 February.

The show will air every Wednesday at 9 pm. It will follow explorer and former British Army paratrooper Levison Wood who walked the Nile – from source to sea – to uncover its many perplexities.

Wood is the first person ever to endure 4,250 miles of walking along the river and exploring some of the most intense yet exquisite countries. He covered a journey of more than seven million steps over a nine-month expanse.

The show will feature Wood’s complete journey which commenced from Republic of Rwanda. The country is landlocked in Central Africa and is called ‘The Land of a Thousand Hills.’ It’s also the location of the Nile’s source. From Rwanda, he travelled to the north through Tanzania. This was followed by Uganda, South Sudan, Republic of Sudan and finally Egypt, where the Nile merges with the Mediterranean Sea.

On his journey, Wood suffers several hurdles and emotional crises, including the passing of a friend and journalist Matt Power (from heat stroke), who joined him along the way. He had to walk through deserts dodging minefields and also save himself amidst a violent civil war in South Sudan. Furthermore, he was robbed on the roadside. He averted gangs and rebels and often was tailed by the local law enforcement.
