Operators
A
Distribution Platform (DP) is the mode of transmission by which TV services are delivered to consumers.
A
Distribution Platform Operator (DPO) is typically a Service Provider, who provides TV services via any one of the different Distribution Platforms.
List Of Distribution Platforms:
Terrestrial --> Through normal Antenna (and Signal Booster), via air, like we used to get Doordarshan, before around 25 years ago. In this example, the DPO would be Doordarshan itself. Because they transmitted their own signal through air, in the form of radio waves.
Cable --> Through cables (wires) provided by Cable TV Operators, who in turn receive the signals via large satellite dishes. Here, the DPO would be your local cable TV operator.
DTH (or Satellite Television) --> Through smaller satellite dishes, wherein consumers typically receive the signal directly from satellites. This is what we are using, wherein Sun Direct, Tata Sky, Videocon, Dish TV, etc.,. serve as DPOs.
DSL/FTTH --> Through telephone (DSL) and broadband (DSL or FTTH) lines. This new technology is being used in some countries, wherein the Telecom Service Provider (TSP), or the broadband ISP (Internet Service Provider) also act as the DPO.
