Today when I tried to add Rs.500/- to the SunDirect wallet after one month free trial, the final balance is shown Rs.440.68/-.
Can any body explain why they deducted the Rs. 60/-?
Is there any GST or some charge for adding money to the wallet?

When I spoke to the customer care they said it's the 18% GST charge. if you calculate 18% GST, then it should come around Rs.38.14 and the balance should be Rs.423.73. I don't find this OK.

Is it same for other DTH operator?
Any body knows anything about it?

Please do let me know..

Thank You,
Rajkumar

GST will be deducted and amount will be credited.
No worries bro, when you will purchase any bouquet/channel now price will be charged excluding GST

GST Calculation:

500 x 0.18 = 90

So, the actual 18% GST for Rs.500, is Rs.90

So, on paper, the ideal amount to be expected in the Sun Direct wallet would be:
500 - 90 = Rs.410.

However, a credit of Rs.440.68 has been done to the wallet.

Here is what I guess has happened:

500 x 0.15864 = Rs.79.32
(which translates to --> a GST of 15.864%)

So, 500 - 79.32 = Rs.420.68

Final Amount to wallet:
Rs.420.68 + Rs.20 Cashback = Rs.440.68

Sun Direct Cashback Chart for top-ups done using their app or website:

So, I guess, in reality, Sun Direct has actually deducted a GST of only 15.864% instead of the default 18%.

In addition to that, they have also given you a cashback of Rs.20.

2) Recharge Process:
Here is what happens during a recharge, using money that is already in the Sun Direct wallet:

a) No additional GST will be added to the recharge amount if you are going to be making the entire payment by only using money that is already in the wallet.

b) An additional GST of 18% will be added to the recharge amount if the wallet has zero balance, and you are going to be paying the entire recharge amount online.

C) 18% GST will be added only partially, if half the payment is made using wallet money and the remaining payment is paid online. Meaning, GST will be applied only to the remaining payment that is about to be paid online.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

Your GST calculation is wrong. Here ₹500 is inclusive of taxes. So, we can't deduct 18% from ₹500. Instead an amount with 18% extra of it makes up ₹500. ie, ₹500÷1.18 = ₹423.73. (₹423.73+ 18% GST = ₹500).

But here, a you hinted Sun Direct provides ₹20 cashback. So the total amount is ₹520. Doing the same calculation for GST deductions, ₹520÷1.18 = ₹440.68. This is what @Rajkumar_bj has got in his account.

Like I had pointed out, 18% of 500 is 90.

Meaning,
500 minus (18% GST of 500) is what we are supposed to get in the wallet.

18% of Rs.500 would be,

[ (500 x 18) ÷ 100 ] = [ (9000) ÷ 100 ] = Rs.90

Or

[ (500 x (18 ÷ 100) ] = [ 500 x (0.18) ] = Rs.90

In other words, as I had mentioned earlier,

500 x 0.18 = Rs.90

So, 500 - 90 = Rs.410 is the amount that should have been in the wallet (if Sun Direct deducted the 18% GST in full).

Going by your logic too,

410 + 18% GST = 500
Or
410 + 90 = 500

That said, I am not sure how you arrived at the number 1.18 to divide 500 by, in order to calculate 18% of Rs.500.

Per your calculation,
500 ÷ 1.18 = 423.73

So, 500 - 423.73 = Rs.76.27

So, your calculation arrives at 76.27 is what is 18% of 500.

I don't think so.

For example, let us calculate our two methods for percentages of 100.

Even without calculating, we can easily tell that:

25% of 100 is 25
and
18% of 100 is 18

By my method,
100 x 0.25 = 25
and
100 x 0.18 = 18

The results are as expected.

However, if we use this 1.18 to calculate 18% of 100:

100 ÷ 1.18 = 84.74

So, 100 - 84.74 = 15.26

I don't think 18% of 100 is 15.26!

So much math 🙆🏻‍♂️
Okay! In starting I was confused like this but later fig out that upfront GST is deducted and will be adjusted with my ongoing pack later when full fledged payment with excluded GST will be deducted for monthly pack.
Although, they also deducted the amount from wallet to complete that monthly cycle. Better check your payment history and what was your previous balance?

On second thoughts,

18% of 423.73 is

423.73 x 0.18 = 76.2714

From what you are saying,

" an amount with 18% extra of it "

Would mean,

423.73 (an amount) + 76.2714 (18% of said amount) = 500.0014

Is this what you are saying?

Which would mean they are calculating GST for the cashback too!?

Meaning,

18% of 440.68 would be,

440.68 x 0.18 = 79.3224

So, 440.68 + 79.3224 = 520.0024

That ....

is weird.

And kind of makes sense.

And makes me wonder why in the world are they calculating GST for cashback?! 🤔

Because, they are not including GST on your subscription but they are calculating GST upfront on your main balance recharge amount. Here, Cashback is also your recharge amount.
When not used main balance.

When used main balance GST gone as it was already deducted from recharged amount wether it was 50 or 520.
