I think this is not because of South first policy this is because of cutting funds and doing miserly investments. YRF movies are way expensive. A South movie max is sold for 15 crore (Goldmines), even lower for other studios. YRF's big budget films have satellite rights more than 50 Crores-90 crores. Sony is the only network which is in profit. Cost cutting has really helped Sony to a large extent. After Viacom deal may be YRF could come back to Sony.

Viacom Deal will bring Special 26 , Gabbar Is Back, Andhadhun, RAW for Sony. The deal with Star is valued for 500 crores i. e 7-8 films. War satellite alone costed 60-70 crores for Star so till 2022 only this deal would last. And if Disney wishes to continue it they will then afterwards they will again come back to Sony which will then become powerful since the inclusion of Viacom-CBS

If these deal did not happen then Sony would be an unbeatable network. Nevertheless u have to lose something. Sony's situation is like Zee's situation during 2007-2011 when they premiered very few films.
