Shop offers 1 kg onion free with a satellite dish :lol

Cashing in on the skyrocketing onion prices, Dinesh Patel, 42, owner of an electronic goods shop in Ahmedabad, hit upon a brilliant idea to boost sale of satellite dishes

Subscribing to a Direct-To-Home (DTH) service from this electronic goods shop in Krishnanagar, Ahmedabad, guarantees "tears of joy" -- that will last for at least three days -- if you are a four-member family. Taking advantage of the spike in onion prices, Dinesh Patel of Shree Umiya Electricals has come up with a maverick promotional offer. With every new satellite dish installation worth Rs 1,999, Patel offers 1 kg of the 'luxury vegetable' free.
"Retail prices of onions have quadrupled over the past three months and have pushed inflation to a seven-month high of 6.46 per cent in September, prompting the central bank to hike interest rates. This has snowballed into a burning political issue.
Besides, onions are inevitable for both the rich and the poor. Necessity being the mother of invention, I hit upon an idea to boost sale of satellite dishes," says Dinesh, who has studied up to class 10. His per-day sales have doubled since he introduced this scheme three days ago. On Saturday, he sold 12 satellite dishes as against six or seven earlier.
"You should never underestimate the power of an onion. Political parties have lost elections in the past for failing to control onion prices. I had no doubt that my scheme would be a hit. In Ahmedabad, people always look for free gifts. And here I am offering 1 kg of an important vegetable for free. In three days I have sold 42 dishes," he says.
"Businessmen like me are already grappling with the slowdown since the consumption is weak. So, offering a discount on purchase of dish antennas would have meant losses. I thought why not offer onions instead. Everybody needs them," he adds.
Dinesh also offers orange or apple equivalent to the price of one kg of onion to his Jain customers. "Customers belonging to the Jain and Swaminarayan communities do not consume onions. So I offer them fruits instead. Everybody is happy. People have appreciated my idea.

They think it is a good deal." Pravin Patel, an electrician, who recently took advantage of Dinesh's scheme, says, "I think it is a brilliant scheme. I did my own research in Krishnanagar before gifting a DTH service to my family this festive season. I found out that Dineshbhai's was the only shop that offered one kg of onion free with a satellite dish. So I bought the equipment from him."
"My wife told me that the quality of onions is also very good. Besides, the DTH service is free for the first two months. Dineshbhai's scheme is the talk of the town. Happiness in small measures also makes for a great Diwali during such inflationary times."
