Multi Screen Media (MSM) is all set to expand
its bouquet of high-definition (HD) channels with the
launch of HD feed of its family comedy entertainment
channel SAB and Hindi movie channel MAX.
The company currently beams four HD channels, SET HD,
Sony Six HD, Pix HD and AXN HD.
“We are ready to launch MAX HD once we get the licence.
It is a very different and unique channel compared to what we have at present,” MSM CEO NP Singh said. “SAB will>also get HD in a few months’ time.”
WE was the first to report that MSM is
gearing up to launch MAX HD.
While MAX also airs MSM’s biggest property, the Indian
Premier League (IPL), SAB is known for its light-hearted
family shows including ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma’,
‘Chidiya Ghar’ and ‘Badi Door Se
Aaye Hain.’
Earlier in March the network had launched AXN HD, thus taking its HD channel count to four.
Among the bigger broadcast networks, only MSM does
not have HD feed of mainstream Hindi movie channel.
Star India’s Star Gold and Zee Entertainment Enterprises
Ltd’s Zee Cinema are already available in HD. ZEEL’s
second brand, &Pictures, also has an HD channel.
Broadcasters are betting big on HD with the boom in the
sale of HD television sets and DTH subscribers
increasingly opting for HD service. While cable operators
have not been able to push HD in a meaningful way, DTH
has been witnessing massive growth in HD subscribers.
Over 25 per cent of new subscribers every quarter are
opting for HD connections.
Moreover, HD adoption helps in driving ARPU growth for
broadcasters as well as DTH operators. Incidentally, on
average, the revenue from an HD subscriber is 1.5–2
times the revenue from a non-HD subscriber.
