I do not remember the same but have memories of Sony having NZ Cricket rights in early 2000s while later on Neo Sports Network had it for some while and later so did Star Sports for a brief period

Some members r stating that Jio has all the financial as well as other resources and can provide IPL in 4K or with other features for free not worrying about losses....we also need to be aware of that Star India is one of the biggest and most successful broadcasters in India and it is owned by Disney which again is a company of huge scale with diversified business across media as well as other fields hence although Disney-Star knows it is of utmost importance to have a strategy wherein they can recover all the investment incurred in buying rights of IPL and other massive costs involved in producing pre/post match shows, hiring commentators / hosts and paying their salary, various logistics / satellite / operational costs etc. thereby aiming to gradually earn profits but at the same time if need be they will put the best foot forward and match up with Jio so as to reach out to maximum audience base providing them best viewing experience. All i want to state is that they can easily counter all the plans made by Jio if they think same can benefit them or help not lose their audience base to Jio.

Disney surely is more cautious as compared to Fox in going overboard with spending on rights of sporting properties or even keeping other costs in control but when need arises to push the peddle on spending for a good reason then they will not hold back on the same. I am quite sensing that we might get Star Sports channels for Free during IPL and even get host of other atrractive features like some active/interactive services enabled on such channels to access features like multi cam viewing, real time data about players/ match etc.

There are zero chances of providing Star Sports free for IPL, if they want more viewership then maybe Star Gold show IPL matches

That is true Sony only had rights. Matches use to air Sony Max. They didn't had Sony Six back than.

We looked at the more traditional channels and platforms. Star was one of them. We had discussions with Zee and one or two others too. I want to be candid about this – we felt that the valuation of many of those parties placed on our property wasn’t similar to what we felt it was worth.

Understandably a lot of broadcasters have a preoccupation with one of my favourite sports – cricket. They throw a lot of money into the sport.

Sure, India Cricket rights need downward revision in pricing but at the same time niche sporting properties like F1 or others cannot demand a pricing at par with what they sell these rights in foreign territories or should i say what is financially unviable for an Indian Sports Broadcaster considering minute audience base of such sporting events in India.

On both India Cricket and Niche Sports front, pricing of rights need to be arrived at based on on ground/current evaluation of all the key factors and thereby take an amicable decision which benefits all stakeholders
