Technicolor is to provide volume supplies of 4K-enabled set-top boxes to Indian DTH pay TV provider Tata Sky early next year – the first time a 4K box has been shipped in volume, according to Technicolor.

Technicolor, which has supplied technology to Tata Sky since 2005, says it is building on its compression and colour science to deliver an augmented content experience capable of delivering Hollywood-grade picture quality to viewers.

“Technicolor once again leads the market in landing the first high-volume deal to deliver 4K set-top boxes to consumers. This deal further solidifies our leadership in the 4K marketplace,” said Michel Rahier, president connected home, Technicolor.

“With the promise of an unparalleled immersive viewing experience and the predicted rapid growth of the 4K market, this agreement is a valuable strategic business opportunity for Technicolor and our long term partner, Tata Sky.”

Technicolor to supply 4K box to Indian satellite broadcaster

Technicolor has struck a deal with Tata Sky, India’s leading direct to home (DTH) service provider, to provide the first 4K set top box to be shipped in volume.

Technicolor unveiled its intentions at IBC last year, where a working prototype of the MediaPlay DST839 box was unveiled, which the manufacturer said would support a 60fps frame rate and HDMI 2.0.

The agreement is the result of a long, strategic relationship with Tata Sky dating back to 2005.
“This deal further solidifies our leadership in the 4K marketplace,” said Technicolor president, Connected Home Michel Rahier.

“With the promise of an unparalleled immersive viewing experience and the predicted rapid growth of the 4K market, this agreement is a valuable strategic business opportunity for Technicolor and our long term partner, Tata Sky.”

“4K is an important milestone in Tata Sky's product portfolio and we are confident of the timing and quality of delivery because of our partnership with Technicolor,” said Tata Sky CEO Harit Nagpal.

Indian DTH broadcaster Tata Sky is a joint venture between the Tata Group and 21st Century Fox.

What does 4k mean, what r its features.

It's the resolution of Ultra High definition(UHD) TV.
From wiki
UHD is a resolution of 3840 pixels × 2160 lines (8.3 megapixels, aspect ratio 16:9) and is one of the two resolutions of ultra high definition television targeted towards consumer television, the other being UHD-2 which is 7680 pixels × 4320 lines (33.2 megapixels). 4K UHD has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of the 1080p HDTV format, with four times as many pixels overall.

4k mean 4000 or 4times more pixel than todays 1080pixel which we call full hd. 4k is daddy of 1080p

But do we have 4K/UHD channels? No...we don't. It will still take 4K channels 2-3 years to be mainstream. Its not even there in developed countries yet. And where are the transponders? A single UHD channel will require the space of 4 HD Channels or 20 SD Channels. I think UHD channels will reach India only after 2018. UHD enabled TV will be needed too.

But it's a good move by Tata Sky. By switching to UHD enabled sets now, Tata Sky's new customers won't have to change their STBs 3 years later.

I think in 2015, the only thing you would watch in UHD resolution will be the HBO On Demand Movies(if HBO does it) or Tata Sky may replace Showcase 3D with Showcase UHD!

In Current Situation No Use of These Type of STBs in India

@Flyingfalcon we don't have 3D channels also but still They are showing 3D movies in showcase. I think they will run a UHD showcase.
