Uday Shankar and James Murdoch-promoted Bodhi Tree Systems has paid Rs 953.23 crore to purchase an additional 2.89% stake in Viacom18, said people privy to the development. The company bought the additional stake from Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), the majority shareholder in the company.

The stake acquisition was financed through the $150 million that Bodhi Tree raised from Comcast Corp-owned NBC Universal and global alternative asset manager Tikehau Capital, the people said.

Reliance Industries Ltd-owned production house Jio Studios is looking beyond sister concern JioCinema to stream its movies and web shows after the latter declined much of its content, two people aware of the matter said. Jio Studios has also stopped green-lighting new projects in the backdrop of many completed projects remaining unsold, the people cited above said on condition of anonymity.
