Disney India’s action-focused Hindi movie channel UTV Action will acquire more international action movie titles going forward.

In line with that strategy, the channel has bought the rights to Chinese–Hong Kong science fantasy romantic comedy ‘The Mermaid’, which has been directed, co-written and co-produced by Stephen Chow.

The channel also premiered two of Chow’s earlier films, ‘Kung Fu Hustle’ and ‘Journey to the West’.

The movie, which will be dubbed in Hindi, will premiere on the channel on 26 January.

“We have got the rights to ‘The Mermaid’. We are going to premiere that in India on 26 January on UTV Action,” said Disney India VP of media networks Vijay Subramaniam.

“Going forward, we will acquire more and more international action films such as ‘The Mermaid’. We have a fair catalogue of Bollywood films. We constantly look for interesting dubbed South Indian films,” he added.

UTV Action, which caters to males seeking hardcore action content, has an equal proportion of India and international content. In Indian content, Bollywood comprises 60% while the remaining is Hindi-dubbed South Indian films. Almost 45% of international content is Hollywood while the rest is non-Hollywood including Chinese and Korean.

International action films are dubbed in Hindi to make it locally relevant for India. According to Subramaniam, UTV Action is a well-segmented offering with action films forming the core.

Besides Bollywood and Southern films, the channel has also showcased content from Marvel and more recently Star Wars.

‘The Mermaid’ is a fantasy action film that broke numerous box-office records such as the biggest opening day and the biggest single-day gross through its seventh day of release and having the biggest opening week of all time in China. On 19 February, it became the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time.
