Want to upgrade from SD to HD

hi friends..
first up all i am new to this community.. but i regularly go through the comments and discussions.. its very helpful and you peoples are going a good job.
Then my question is that can we use HD set-top box in my normal old tv(its not LED or LCD but picture-tube one.). in my TV it will work or not.. one of my friend is ready to give me HD box. please help friends. thanks for all replys in advance.
