No, I don't think Sony is merging with Zee just for sporting rights. They are doing merger for regional market and movies. Zee was already weak in the sports market, so why would Sony merge with it for IPL? And now Zee also has the TV rights of ICC. Yes, they have not paid yet but if this merger is done then they will also pay.

On current exchange rate it is 800 crore approx, if merger happens sony has to input 1.7 billion, almost 12000 crore inr. Sony can invest that money in other places like studio next, indian superhero movies

It's irony that after successfully ruining Zee, Now Punit Goenka trying to become CEO of the merger group.. just to destroy SONY as well. That man is good for nothing, Zee was far better network under his father Subash Chandra
