The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) last week directed the local administrations across India to ensure uninterrupted service of cable operation after it received complaints from many operators.
The Ministry in its letter to district magistrates, district collectors, and additional district magistrates last week called on for ensuring operational continuity of Cable TV Network during the country-wide lockdown.
It pointed out that the Government of India had issued various guidelines which include the uninterrupted flow of information networks including cable TV network operations.
The Ministry noted that the cable TV operators are mandated to show Doordarshan channels free to cost to their subscribers and that DD News was the most authentic source of the government-related information. It said that it was essential that correct and authentic news should reach the public in zero-time to check the rumours and fake news in these difficult times.
It noted that it had received many complaints from some cable operators regarding their movement not being permitted by the local authorities in their area of operation.
The Ministry referring to its old directive has directed the local authorities to make necessary arrangements for the un-interrupted service of cable operation. Given the lockdown, the Ministry noted that the notice was being served through its website.
Why limit to cable operators? DTH operators should be asked too who has broader reach. Specially in rural areas. How are people expected to recharge during lockdown?
More complaints from Cable operators hence. Plus cable operators have more work to do on ground.
