Airtel Digital TV to Bring Dolby Digital Plus Surround Sound to Indian Broadcast Television
Jun 23, 2010

MUMBAI, Jun 23, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB) announced that Airtel(R) digital TV, the Direct-to-Home (DTH) service from Bharti Airtel (one of India's leading integrated telecom services providers), has declared its selection of Dolby(R) Digital Plus as the surround sound format for its new HD DTH service and set-top boxes. Using Dolby Digital Plus, Airtel digital TV plans to offer customers HD content with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound.

Dolby Digital Plus has been adopted by many of the world's leading TV and set-top box manufacturers and broadcasters providing consumers with full digital surround sound and stereo sound in a single audio stream, making it ideal for bandwidth-constrained environments such as HD DTH broadcasting.

Speaking on the occasion, Ajai Puri, Director and CEO, DTH, Bharti Airtel, said, "Innovative technology that adds value to customer experiences is a vital element of our brand endeavors. HD is usually about visual appeal, but our consumer insight says that TV is as much an audio medium as it is visual. That is why we have invested in being the first to bring to India the Dolby Digital Plus sound experience in HD set-top boxes. This launch underlines our key strength of understanding consumer needs and using technology to deliver a simple, elegant benefit to our valued customers who will experience the next level of TV viewing in India."

Mahesh Sundaram, Vice President, Asia Pacific, Dolby Laboratories said, "We are pleased to join Airtel for the launch of its HD DTH service. Our goal is to bring the same outstanding Dolby sound consumers know and love from the cinema direct to the home. Dolby Digital Plus makes the entertainment experience richer, more realistic, and enveloping so consumers can hear their favorite programs as the artist or director intended."

Dolby Digital Plus is a sophisticated audio system based on Dolby Digital. It is designed to adapt to the changing demands of future entertainment delivery while retaining compatibility with existing Dolby Digital 5.1-channel home theater systems.

"Using Dolby Digital Plus as the audio format for its infrastructure, Airtel can efficiently deliver a premium HD audio experience by satellite to its customers," added Sundaram.
