MUMBAI: Viacom18’s English entertainment channel Comedy Central is now available in high definition (HD).
The channel’s HD feed is available on direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Sky.
Comedy Central HD is available at Rs 20 per month on the DTH platform. With the addition of Comedy Central, the total count of HD channels on Tata Sky has increased to 29.
The channel is expected to launch on other DTH platforms as well.
Mr. Sudhanshu Vats“Comedy Central is available in HD beginning 1 July. Comedy Central HD is available on Tata Sky,” Viacom18 Group CEO Sudhanshu Vats said while announcing the launch of new English GEC Colors Inifinity.
Unlike Comedy Central that launched with standard-definition (SD) feed only, Colors Infinity will be available in SD and HD from Day 1 of its launch.
Of late, there has been a flurry of HD channel launches in the English GEC and movie space.
Multi Screen Media (MSM) had in April launched AXN HD.
Star India’s Star Movies Select HD is all set to launch on 4 July. The broadcaster is also planning to launch FX HD to complement FX. ZEEL is planning to launch Zee Café HD.
According to FICCI KPMG 2015 report, the adoption of HD channels has been growing rapidly due to a boom in the sale of HD television sets.
HD adoption continues to drive ARPU growth for DTH operators with average ARPU from an HD subscriber at 1.5–2 times the ARPU from a non-HD subscriber.
