MUMBAI: After dabbling in films, Grazing Goats Pictures, the production company started by former Colors programming head Ashvini Yardi and Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, is now foraying into television production by launching a fiction series for Zee TV.
Titled ‘Jamai Raja’, the show will challenge stereotypes by presenting ‘jamais’ instead of ‘bahus’ on television screens.
Speaking to TelevisionPost.com, Zee TV programming head Namit Sharma says, “Ashvini had a very interesting concept in mind and we are glad to associate with her. We are very excited about working with her as she has a fantastic experience in TV and films.
We believe in bringing different concepts for Zee TV and on television, and Ashvini is an innovator so it was a happy marriage.” The show has been in development for over a year, and the shooting has commenced with sets based in Naigaon, Mumbai. 15–20 episodes have already been shot. Refusing to divulge further details, Sharma said that the promo will go on air within this week and the announcements for the launch should be expected next week.
“We are finalising the time slot and date of launch, and hope to announce it soon,” he adds. Yardi has been associated with Zee TV for 14 years in varied roles, which she calls her first home. This prompted her to pitch the show to Zee TV. “We came up with this idea when we saw too many similar concepts being featured on television.
We thought, why don’t we do a show with ‘jamai’ as the centre point? Through this show, we are exploring a new relationship between the mother-in-law and son-in-law. That is how we started developing it, and since Zee is close to my heart, we pitched it to them,” Yardi tells TelevisionPost.com.
The show will target the core audience of Zee TV and is presently not looking at a finite format. Written by a fresh, young team of the production house, ‘Jamai Raja’ stars Nia Sharma, Ravi Dubey, Achint Kaur, Apara Mehta, Delnaz Paul and Shruti Ulfat in pivotal roles.
It mainly features the story of Siddharth (Dubey) and how he takes it upon himself to repair the estranged relationship between his wife and mother-in law.
