Discussion Broadcaster rights of sporting events of yesteryears

How come Doordarshan had so many Sporting rights in the 1990s? They really gave these foreign broadcasters a run for their money. Not only sporting rights they had some really awesome TV shows as well. Doordarshan was a gem during that period.
