So the black bars are not there right?


If a :HD channel is shown is SD format in fulll screen
Then they have to crop it
You will miss out some portion from both the sides

You will miss out some portion from both the sides

btw most of the content on cc SD are shot in full HD...so u will get cropped/ black bars in ccSD also..

Not if they transmit the SD channel in 16:9 aspect ratio. In that case, you get the entire picture and aspect as the :HD version but in SD resolution (ie lesser clarity).

You can check some of the shows on Z Cafe are shown in 16:9 format.

You will not get any black bars if it is transmitted in 16:9. One more example is Epic channel. SD channel transmitted in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Clear comparison is Movies Now SD and Epic SD. Both are originally :HD 16:9. But whereas Movies Now SD is downscaled from the :HD version and shown in 4:3 ratio (thus getting the black bars), Epic SD is transmitted in 16:9 with no black bars.

If you transmit a SD channel in 16:9 ratio then SD customers who have crt TV will get black bars
