Refuting media reports about DD India going off
the air, public broadcaster Prasar Bharati today said that
the channel will continue to be available on other satellites
even as it continues to negotiate with Hot Bird 13B
satellite and Deutsche Welle for extension of carriage
agreement.
Prasar Bharati member (personnel) SC Panda said, “The
report that DD India is going off the air is unfounded and
baseless. On the contrary, the channel is planning to
expand its footprint to several new areas of the globe.”
DD India is currently distributed in Canada, the USA,
Mauritius and a few other places through a separate
arrangement. It is also available on Insat 4B.
As reported earlier by the legal
agreement with Deutsche Welle, through which the channel
is distributed in Europe via Hot Bird 13B, is set to expire
on 30 September 2015.
Prasar Bharati and Doordarshan are trying to renew the
agreement for the Hot Bird 13B satellite space either
through Deutsche Welle or directly through Hot Bird.
DDG (commercial) CK Jain had told that Prasar Bharati was working on various options. “There
are plans to renew it but Deutsche Welle is not having the
bandwidth to carry the channel. If it does not work out, we
won’t be on Hot Bird 13B. So we are working on various
options. We will either try to do it ourselves or talk to
other distributors,” he had said.
Furthermore, the Prasar Bharati board is taking measures
to increase the distribution of DD India in other parts of the
globe and a proposal for that has already been mooted.
The process will be initiated after the approval of the
proposal.
