Dish TV has guided for a marginal increase in its capital expenditure for the current financial year even as it expects to add at least 1.5 million net subscribers.
The direct-to-home (DTH) company is also planning to introduce a hybrid set-top box (STB) that will enable consumers to access the internet.
Dish TV’s capex is likely to be in the region of Rs 850 crore (Rs 8.5 billion) in FY17 because of more high-definition (HD) subscriber additions than in the previous fiscal. In FY16, its capex stood at around Rs 800 crore (Rs 8 billion).
Dish TV expects to mop up at least 2.8 million subscribers at the gross level in the current fiscal.
“We had added 2.8 million gross subscribers in FY16. Net subscriber additions were at 1.5 million.
Similar or better subscriber additions can be expected in FY17,” Dish TV managing director Jawahar Goel told media analysts.
Dish TV’s HD subscriber base stands at 1.4 million. HD is 10% of the company’s total net base and 19% on the monthly gross additions.
The HD subscribers are primarily coming from the 42 cities under Phases I and II of digital addressable system (DAS).
Led by HD, Dish TV expects its ARPU in FY17 to increase by 3–4% over the previous year. In FY16, ARPU expanded to Rs 174 from Rs 168 a year ago.
Dish TV’s Rs 99 plan has been a prime driver for subscriber acquisitions in the quarter ended March 2016.
This contributes to around 30% of the company’s monthly subscriber acquisitions.
The ARPU for this pack settles at around Rs 174 (including service tax) as subscribers supplement it with three other mini packs.
The T20 World Cup and the IPL also helped in mopping up new subscribers.
In the fourth quarter of FY16, Dish TV added 5,08,000 net subscribers compared to 3,17,000 in the preceding quarter.
As of 31 March 2016, Dish TV’s total net subscriber base stood at 14.5 million, the largest in India.
Dish TV’s revenue from carriage and from advertising in FY16 stood at around Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) and Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) respectively.
Bandwidth income was at Rs 105 crore (Rs 1.05 billion).
Dish TV expects content cost to increase by 7-9% in FY17.
Programming content and other costs stood at Rs 855.46 crore (Rs 8.55 billion) in FY16, up 6.8% from Rs 800.75 crore (Rs 8.01 billion) a year ago.
