For the Walt Disney Company, 2015 has been a terrific year. While ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ posted record box-office figures, the media conglomerate’s flagship kids network has overtaken Nickelodeon in the US in total viewers.
For the first time, Disney Channel has finished the year as the most-watched cable network in the US on a total-day basis.
It got crowned with an average 1.234 million viewers, edging out Nickelodeon for the first time.
Averaging 1.186 million viewers, Nickelodeon got dethroned from its No. 1 status in the total-viewer category after 20 years.
Though ruling for so long, the Viacom-owned network’s ratings had first started to fall since 2011.
Disney Channel’s boost in ratings was helped by strong original movies like ‘Descendants’ and ‘Teen Beach 2’ and good series launches for “BUNK’D” and “K.C. Undercover”.
Though Nickelodeon led in the kids 2-11 demography (642,000 vs. 607,000), Disney Channel won in other kids categories like 6-11 (423,000 vs. 328,000) and 9-14 (406,000 vs. 212,000).
Disney Channel fared strongly in primetime and was a top-5 cable TV network in that time zone for the 13th year in a row in total viewers (1.7 million)
