Star only over valued IPL , and BCCI rights, earlier it is not much price. Now this year also, Star fight with viacom and bought IPL rights for huge price which is unnecessary.
Star can stay here with sports business like Sony with minimal low valued cricket rights, Let viacom suffer with BCCI / IPL rights
Disney wants to reduce sports load from its core business, it is not for Star Sports in India, even for ESPN in US also.

Viacom 18 is shifting its hq to one international center.
It will be taking up 8 floors making it the biggest Tennant.
People close by say its part of their new expansion plan.
(Sign of purchase 😊)
Looks it's funny how many buildings they want if they seriously thinking of purchase, Good that Viacom18 shifting it's HQ to one international complex and expansion of their business plans.

Also Star India last year Renews Agreement of HQ office for long-term tenure of 9 years in Urmi estate.

After Disney's plan to offload Star(completely or partially), many are portraying like the network become a sinking ship so that Disney decided to sell it. But for me Disney days of Star is overwhelming. I too had doubts on fate of Star when it went to the hands of Disney from Fox. How Disney will treat the network, Is it get a full fledged support like from Fox..? Shunted UTV shadows was there that time. So many high profile exits happened eventually. But Star able to continue its growth under Disney. Everybody thought Uday's exit will hit the company. Reality is the new head K Madhavan and team able to drive the network even better than Uday Shanker. From Disney side the financial support was good as like Fox. From the covid times to till now the whole network yielded their best in history. When it comes to rating, it is no:1 in 5 languages at a time while competitors able to achieve it from 0-2 no:s. Destructed the empire of Zee Marathi, regained crown from Zee Bangla etc are the major gains. Star Plus, Star Maa standing unquestioned by rivals these time. It generated 17K crores revenue which is the highest ever revenue a network able to make( the 2nd one's revenue stand at less than 10k crores). But they did some big - enthusiastic spendings on sports so that their balance sheet gone wrong. Even the revenue generated from those properties was the best but as the expense is higher created pressure situation.
Afterall why Disney seeks selling Star.? The core issue is with its ultimate parent in US. Bob Iger returned as CEO in a situation which Disney is going through big financial issues. Its movies are failing continuously at box office, Streaming revenue not gone par with expectation, other divisions made poor performance. So inorder to overcome the crisis Iger announced some cost cutting measures. Removing conventional TV from Disney's core buisness is one of the decision. So they made plans to off load its TV assets globally(not only in India) So it include ABC, ESPN etc.
Disney likes to have bigger revenues in short span. They bought and run these all assets to nurture streaming. When it comes to India and Star, even if it made an 800 crore profit annually, its just 100 million USD - lesser than their budget for a single movie. For an Indian company 800 crore is big number. Running a vast company to get 100 million an year may not be fine for them. Also television in India has life but no growth. Means there will not be much expansion in revenue. Star touched almost a peak revenue. At the same time Ambani started an invasion in sports and streaming. Disney senses it all and found it better to leave than fight. This is the reason for sale plan of Star and not due to its any type of failure. And all these happened in a short span.

They found that Streaming business is not easy like TV business in India due to too much competition for new movies and sports rights acquisition. They should exit sports business to ensure profits from entertainment business and reduce D+HS premium plan price from Rs.1499/- to Rs.999/-.

All these strategy, even Uday shankar know streaming big risky business with no Goal in India and he want TV buisness share, that's why he coping same hotstar things Premium contents is hollywood, watch and play first 2 IPL seasons free and third season they will pushing it's in pay plans.

even if they or Someone planned buy stakes or Merge with Star India Pvt ltd entity, Star remain Star only. Lol somebody said Never bet against Uday Shankar, Uday shankar knows that which own huge Market share and which company reaching out to 9 out of 10 cable/satellite TV homes in India. If these things in final stage ultimately Viacom18 which going die for survival of another media company.

If star / disney wants to reduce sports portfolio in india, then why star went for IPL tv rights, ICC rights (both tv and digital ) and Aus cricket rights.
With all things, they are in no where right now, can't close the sports business or can't continue with 20 sports channels for these rights.

ICC tv rights transferred to Zee/Sony combine and now they are scared about breakeven for higher cost of IPL TV rights, but Jio/Viacom18 can face loss or manages with Telecom revenues.

I think the plans to sell sports & ott buisness came after ICC auction. Now they are not actively participating in biggie auctions - BCCI, ISL etc.

understood, but Star can retain with less sports channels rather than either closing their business, else they have to transfer all these rights to others like ICC tv rights
ICC digital - Viacom eagerly will get it
IPL - Again Sports 18 will absorb it
Aus rights - have to transfer to Sony / Zee, i don't think Viacom will interest in this rights

Actually now all 3 broadcasters getting equal cricket rights. Overall Jan 24 to Dec 24 India playing less than 20 matches in home, 10 Test matches including. Maybe IPL prepone to March from General election, if these not happen BCCI may increase home matches adding Zim/WI tour here.
