In India there are now more than 20 million HD-ready homes, yet only 2 - 2.5 million STBs have been rolled out across the country. So about 4 % subscribers. So it is reasonable that TATASKY will give SD as priority over HD in channel addition.

It all began in October 2003 when the government gave out the licence to Dish TV, part of the Zee group, to operate direct-to-home (DTH) services after a long debate. That was nearly seven years after Star TV had made an aborted attempt to bring in the new technology taking advantage of the fact that the sector was totally unregulated. But the government, confronted with growing concerns that it could lead to a security breach (just like in telecom) and cultural invasion of the West, decided to do the easiest thing: ban DTH.
