HEVC compression format requires half the bandwidth to run a channel in same quality as compared to what will needed using MPEG4 technology. So if a HD channel requires 5 to 8 Mbps bandwidth (depending on resolution of channel and quality maintained by operators) using MPEG 4 , same can b achieved within 2.5 to 4 Mbps bandwidth if HEVC technology is used.

Now a 4K channel requires twice the bandwidth of a HD channel hence as all hybrid/smart boxes of various DTH r HEVC enabled hence they can provide a 4K channel in equal bandwidth as is required for running a HD channel in MPEG4 on their platform

Forget About 4K, If Bandwidth Is Not An Issue For DTHs,

Why So Many HD Channels Pending To Be Added Across All DTHs?

Or 4K channel from Viacom18 will be also exclusive to Tata Play IPTV.

Viacon18 has already made it clear that FIFA World Cup 4K Feed will be available via Jio Cinema on Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Mobile Service Providers. As far as TV is concerned, let's see if viacom18 allows users of these operators to access 4K feeds thru smart boxes / tv or just thru mobile devices.

Tata Play can add 4K Feed thru their IPTV option too which is available on Binge Boxes but i am not sure if viacom18 will allow it or what would be the charges applicable (if any).

As far as regular 4K Feed which may be available as a service channel across different operators, we need to again wait for confirmation. My gut feeling says that viacom18 will provide it to operators and that too for Free, same will accessible to all smart box users

Vadi anna there r various reasons for the same, already discussed many of these earlier too

DTH Says Under HEVC Compression A 4K Channel Requires 12 - 14 Mbps Data Transfer

Where As It's Only 2 Mbps For SD Under Same Compression

That's Why Still Travelxp 4K HDR Under IPTV Segment On Tata Play

Anna, Celebrities Management Private Limited has obtained 9 TV Channel licences from MIB. These are for Travel XP SD, Travel XP HD, Travel XP Tamil, FoodXP, Hi Dost, Music India, Sangeet Bhojpuri, Sangeet Marathi, Sangeet Bangla.

Travel XP 4K does not have permission to be transmitted as a satellite channel hence available as a service channel on Tata Play

Anyways for FIFA World Cup 4K Feed Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV and dish d2h can even opt for Internet Based Channel route so there will no need of utilising satellite bandwidth for it.

Even if they use satellite option then thru HEVC + Advanced Encoders bandwidth usage can significantly be reduced.

Guys, any update about FY23 Q2 figures for overall DTH subscription base as it stands today.

Also any official information available as to how much subscriber base of each DTH operator is now having HD, Smart / Hybrid Set Top Box Boxes. Incase large number of customers r now having HD boxes then it is time that broadcasters think about a strategy to bring down cost of HD channels & promote the same which would help increase the subscription numbers for these channels. When HD channels have been opted for a sizeable/ majority subscriber base across platforms then broadcasters can gradually make a shift towards closing down Standard Definition feed of respective channels & even offering exciting offers to subscribers who r still watching SD channels foruogradeing to HD channels

I know all Standard Definition channels cannot be shut down, these include channels having just SD feed and even certain ones having dual (SD and HD) feeds as in latter case sometimes both feeds serve a particular purpose which is essential for a broadcaster to have a wider reach for content aired or helps in garnering more ad / subscription revenue by having a very specific / targeted reach among subscribers
