80 crore not for 5 years, for just 1 year. But still it's not high if you look at the number of shows which is around 150 & there are upcoming shows included also. 400 crores in 5 years is not much when someone look at the money spent by hot star on some indian show like rudra & some Mughal based show which are not big hit like prime panchayat, netflix delhi crime, sony liv scam, maharani. A big Bollywood movie or any big regional movie cost around 80 - 100 crore. Star spent around 40 crore for a movie like Govinda naam mera.
The problem with star is now they are in a tough spot after spending huge on ipl & icc. On icc rights they paid almost 2.5 times of second bidder( sony) . Later they sold icc tv rights to zee at almost similar price sony bid. Disney star wants to cut cost but they are cutting costs in good thing. If sony liv can generate high revenue with low budget shows , lesser known tv artists & without box office blockbuster movies then why not hotstar
