Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, in association with North Eastern Council (NEC), has launched a six-month Certificate Course in Tourism and Hospitality Management. Funded by the North Eastern Council, the course will help participants project the North East as a vibrant tourist destination, according to a report in The Times of India.

Paban Singh Ghatowar, Union Minister of State, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), lauded the efforts of the youngest IIM in the country while launching the course. "The credit goes to the director and the inspired team working with him. It is a befitting reply to those who considered that IIM in a place like Shillong impossible. The institution has definitely proved it is not the place that matters but determination and application of developed methods of management and technology," he said.

He pledged to give attention to vital development sectors in the region and appealed to the youth of the North East to take advantage of such opportunities. "The North East Region Vision 2020 document advocates that structural transformation in the economy can only take place by creating and enhancing multiple dimensional capacities that are linked to the human resource requirements for expanding the primary, manufacturing and service sectors."

DK Agrawal, Program Chairman, IIM Shillong, said the initiative was the result of an earlier skill-mapping project he had undertaken wherein the innate talent of the youth of North East Region was realised.

Expressing happiness over the ability of NEC to involve IIM Shillong in organizing relevant courses, Ghatowar stated that tourism in the North East Region has the potential to emerge as a huge industry and therefore, the human resource developed through such courses was the need of the hour.
