Satyamev Jayate's 'mid-week' score is healthy; but can it hold on?

According to TAM, the primetime telecast of Satyamev Jayate has garnered an overall TVR of 4.08 across all channels in the C&S 4+ market in the six metro regions. On Star Plus, the property scored 3.79 TVR in the HSM market across three metros.

With an approximate 6 lakh plus views on YouTube and close to 7,08,232 likes on one of the show pages on Facebook (at the time of filing the report), Aamir Khan-led Satyamev Jayate has surely become a huge blockbuster hit across the social media circle. Not to forget, the show and the subject of its first episode have also been one of the top 10 trending subjects on Twitter. According to Blogworks, a social media consulting firm, the total tweets (including re-tweets) for the show stood at 26,452 on May 6, 2012 (the day the show was launched), wherein the total re-tweets were 10,890 and the total reach (number of unique users exposed to a message or brand) stood at 1,18,93,522.

But even as the buzz stays high, does this maddening fervour also reflect on the nationwide curiosity with which the Indian television viewers watched the first episode of the show on Sunday (May 6) at 11 am?

According to TAM, the primetime telecast of Satyamev Jayate has garnered an overall TVR of 4.08 across all channels in the C&S 4+ market in the six metro regions (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad). These channels include Star Plus, STAR Pravah, DD National, STAR Utsav, ETV, Vijay, STAR Jalsha, STAR World and Asianet. Consider the terrestrial market, too (that is, terrestrial, cable, satellite, age group 4+) and the ratings stand a little higher at 4.27 TVR.

The mid-week data from TAM also suggests that the show's primetime telecast was viewed by as many as 81,46,000 viewers in the C&S 4+ age group; for the all 4+ markets, the cumulative reach of the same during the primetime telecast was 89,60,000. Additionally, if one considers just Star Plus, the show has garnered 3.79 TVR across the three metros (Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata) in the HSM market.

Various media experts feel that while the show has exhibited a healthy performance, they expected it to deliver more that 4 TVR (at least) across the HSM market. However, considering the time slot that it occupies, the performance still remains "good if not great", is the universal consensus.

Says PM Balakrishna, chief operating officer, Allied Media, "While the channel and Aamir Khan have together succeeded in creating a huge brand connect in terms of numbers, the show could have done better to have become more attractive to the advertisers."

R S Suriyanarayanan, business director, LMG, says, "Any programme that goes beyond 2.5 TVR in the HSM market is considered to be a top programme in the region. And, with a Sunday morning 11 am slot at hand, the show has done well for itself."

However, Praveen Tripathi, chief executive, Magic9 Media & Consumer Knowledge stands for a different view. He says that the average viewership of the show was 0.50 TVR across the six metros (C&S 4+) and this is almost one-eighth of the total viewership that the show garnered. "This means that while a lot of people flocked onto the show to watch it, many of them did not stay on it for more than 10 minutes. And this indicates that in the future, the show may not be able to hold onto the viewership of its first episode," he says.

Evidently, it cannot be overlooked that the show's well-designed pre-launch promotions had influenced the huge curiosity factor to enforce the first episode appointment viewing. Consequently, a high viewership was nothing but expected! And therefore, it will be the following few episodes of the show that will finally determine the content viewership trend for the property.

Sundeep Nagpal, director, Stratagem Media, says, "While I am hoping that the show will do well, I am also worried that as the high decibel promos subside, the ratings could eventually fall."

Meanwhile, there is also anticipation at play that the show could eventually stabilise in and around a similar TVR (the numbers already delivered). But if that happens, it could also motivate advertisers to negotiate on the premium 10-second slot rate that STAR is currently demanding. For the record, industry experts state that STAR is demanding about Rs10-12lakh per 10-second spot on the show for the overall network package.

A top media buyer on conditions of anonymity says, "At an average rating of about 4.7 TVR, a 10-second spot on IPL is being sold for around Rs 5.5 lakh. Therefore, if Satyamev Jayate is being considered a national telecast property like the IPL, then one must understand that to ask Rs 10 lakh for a 10-second spot per episode for such delivery is just not justifiable."

In today's media world, more often than not, deals are cracked on the basis of CPRPs, wherein advertisers put the money only where the buck is. Agreed that at least for the sponsors the show has created a stupendous buzz, but 60-70 per cent of revenues for any given show are still dependent on spot buys. And according to another media pundit who does not wish to be named, there are not many advertisers who would be willing to pay such a premium for the spots until they are acknowledged as a brand that is socially conscious.

"And this is all the more reason why we have to wait and watch how the show performs in the next two-three episodes," he says.

Satyamev Jayate, the new Star India TV show from Bollywood star Aamir Khan, has hit ratings gold, reaching almost half of homes in India's top six metros in its first week on air.

Mid-week data from media measurement company TAM indicates 47.6% of the population of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad watched the first episode of the 13-part talk based series last Sunday (6 May).

In total, the show reached 14 million cable and satellite homes in India, while 400,000 terrestrial viewers also tuned into the hard hitting show via the public broadcaster Doordarshan (DD).

Satyamev Jayate opened at 4.27 television ratings points (TVR) for cable, satellite and terrestrial audiences of over four years across the multiple channels that showed it in India: Star Plus, Star Pravah, DD National, Star Utsav, ETV, Vijay, Star Jalsha, Star World and Asianet.

The three metros in the Hindi speaking markets recorded 5.2 TVR for cable and satellite audiences on the Star network, with Delhi reaching 6.5 and Mumbai at 5.7 TVR. Star Plus alone achieved a 3.79 TVR for the 11am-12.30pm slot in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Review: Satyamev Jayate episode 3 on dowry

After female foeticide and child sexual abuse, it’s dowry. The third episode ofSatyamev Jayate, hosted by the Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, dealt with fighting and speaking up against this social injustice that women all over India tolerate on a regular basis.

The show follows a recognisable format; introduce the problem, support it with facts and figures, bring in people who have experienced the problem first hand and then through such case studies try to understand the gravity of the problem in question. It’s a basic and simple format but effective nevertheless.

This particular episode tried to shed light on the fact that the problem of dowry is not just prevalent among the lower classes but across all sections of society. The show included women from metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai who came on the sets and related horrifying stories about mental torture and physical abuse that they went through, along with snippets of women from remote sections of Bihar and Maharashtra.

Komal from Delhi, who was bombarded with demands and pumped for money throughout her marriage, had been abandoned by her husband and was half dead in a foreign country before help finally came. Another girl named Nishana committed suicide after enduring verbal abuse from her husband for a long time.

Jalandhar’s Paramjeet Kaur’s husband took off for Australia, after taking almost Rs15 lakh from her family for “studies”, promising to come back within 15 days. While he has been away Paramjeet’s in-laws have been harassing her family constantly for more dowry. Finally, now, her husband is demanding a divorce and wants to get the procedure done online.

As with everything, there is a flip side. Santosh Kumar from Bihar was made to go through, what is called, “Pakadwa Byah” just so that the father of the bride did not have to worry about dowry. While the audience laughed at his narration of how he was kidnapped and married off, one can’t help but reflect on the desperation of brides’ parents which leads them to take such measures.

The show even included an inspirational story, that of Mumbai’s Rani Tripathi. Belonging to a middle class family, Rani, against all odds fought for what was right and took control of her own life. Instead of giving in to the ever increasing demands from the groom’s side she, along with her family, staged a full blown sting operation and exposed her potential groom to the media.

The show, towards the end, had people from different villages and cities talking about their fight against dowry with whole communities coming together and taking a stand on the issue. People belonging to the North-Eastern states talked about the practice not being followed in their communities and how it seemed alien to them. It signed off on a positive note with a beautiful song titled “Mujhe kya bechega rupaiya” performed by Sona Mohapatra.

The final message was: the laws are in place, now it is up to the men and women of the country to find their voice, speak up, do the right thing and say no to dowry. Although this episode of Satyamev Jayate’s research seemed a bit more thorough as compared to its episode on child sexual abuse (ep. 2), but it still didn't answer one question; what can be done to empower those women who have not been fortunate enough to receive education in urban schools and are still withering away in remote parts of the country?

Satyamev Jayate isn’t over yet, special show planned for Independence Day :sp

Star Plus’ gritty up-close look at India’s malaises through the eyes of Aamir Khan in its Sunday mid-morning show Satyamev Jayate isn’t quite over yet. The last of the 13 episodes may have been aired on July 29, but the channel is reportedly planning a special episode to be telecast on August 15 to coincide with the Independence Day.

MxMIndia learns that the extra episode is in the nature of a round-up examining the impact of Satyamev Jayate, how its themes have been received and how the various guests have fared since the airing of their stories.

Some of the impact has already come across in ABP News’ ‘Asar’ programme which followed on the Friday after each episode, and the 14th episode is thus likely to be a “super-Asar”, a source told MxMIndia. However, this episode may not be shown on other language channels, it is learnt, but only on Star Plus in Hindi.

A source in the network revealed that the Satyamev Jayate set has been dismantled, so the 14th episode will probably have a different look-and-feel from the show itself.

The impact of Satyamev Jayate was also a shot in the arm financially for the NGOs that each episode supported, and this is also due to be talked about. The Reliance Foundation has matched all the proceeds that have come in for the charities, a fair bit of it even came in after each week’s ‘Asar’ was aired on ABP News.

With the onset of reality shows on television the stars too started making a mark. Those reality shows would mainly be game shows or in any other way be entertaining.

Aamir Khan made a mark on television by showing the dirty truth that has been lingering in our country for long. The show received huge response from the viewers and was widely appreciated. The show dealt with “untouchability”, “female feticide”, and “child sexual abuse” among the various other topics. The show would get aired on every Sunday at 11 am in the morning. Every week there would be a new topic which would be openly discussed without any fear. There would also be a helpline and solutions provided for people who needed help.

Recently the show is back in the news because one of the participants, Abdul Hakim, of this show is being brutally killed. The incident is being considered an act of honor killing. The actor has shown his grief on the incident and was quoted as saying, “Disturbing and unfortunate incident. Will speak to the government authorities in UP to help and ensure the family is safe. The culprits must be brought to the book. The case is registered on the basis of right facts.”

Abdul Hakim and his wife had featured on one of the episodes of this show. The couple had married against the wishes of their parents. The wife has put the blame on her family members for the death of her husband. Abdul Hakim who was 28-year old man was killed in Bulandshahr. His wife spoke to CNN-IBN saying that she had asked for police protection earlier fearing for her life. The police did not intervene in this matter pointing out that it was a personal quarrel. He was killed openly with several gun shots.

Mehawish was then quoted as saying, “They have killed my husband, they will kill me now. I am 9 months pregnant. My husband would have been alive if police protection was provided.”

Abdul and Mehawish declared on the show that they had eloped form Meerut going against their parents’s wishes. They got married in the year 2010 in November. Later they shifted to Delhi. Their families had been forced to leave the native places as they had been dictated to do so by the panchayat. The panchayat had also declared death for this couple. On the show the whereabouts of the two had been exposed to the Khap panchayat.
