One doesn't need to be crorepati to buy a 4k tv, Nowadays 4k tv sets are available at very affordable price. Launch of SS 4k can open new doors (more 4k channels launch may happen).
There r affordable 4K TV's but r same still r not within budget of large % of population so it still remains a niche category and add to that spending which is required to subscribe / watch 4K content and hence 4K remains a super niche category. Do not expect 4K channels or content to be available for Free or at low cost, IPL being offered for free in 4K on Jio Cinema or maybe on Star Sports 4K is just one off case. The whole economic dynamics of broadcasters running full fledged 4K channel is not a viable option, on OTT there is some scope but still subscriber base will remain to be minute compared to SD or HD customer base
Remember after all these years even HD channels have not been able to attain high penetration and SD channels still r opted by larger population, also this despite the fact that running a HD channel or producing / acquiring HD content is lot less costly for broadcasters as compared to 4K content / transmission and HD channels cost lot less to subscribe
To fully enjoy real benefits of 4K content one needs to have 55 inches or above TV sets and very less number of people can buy them. Also already explained why on subscription or ad revenue front too 4K channels will not be successful as regular TV Channels in India.... OTT is the way forward for 4K content alongwith certain 4K service channels which may be made available for certain events on Linear TV.
