All these channels are operational under the
existing downlinking licences.

Uplinking means uploading the signal onto the
satellite from where it is relayed to various telecast
destinations. These destinations then downlink
(download) the signal and relay to the television
homes. Until now, STAR India was only able to
downlink signals to seven sports channels in India

- six of them were active and one downlink licence
remained dormant (registered in the name of
ESPN).

We need more sports events otherwise repeated telecastings of same events becomes bored.

Yes, so once they uplink from India... they can downlink the signals as well, back in India from the satellite, to which they ve uplinked d signals.

MUMBAI: Star will soon start uplinking its sports channels from India. After waiting for more than a year, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch-controlled Twenty-First Century Fox has finally got the nod from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) to carry out such an exercise.

Besides receiving uplinking licences for its existing channels, Star India has also got MIB approval to launch three new sports channels.

Star has got uplinking licences for
Star Sports 1, Star Sports 2, Star
Sports 3, Star Sports 4, Star Sports
HD1, Star Sports HD2 and ESPN (ESP
News).

Additionally, it has got uplinking
licences to launch three new
channels namely ESPN HD, Star
Sports Highlights and Star Cricket
Asia. If one counts the ESP News
licence that is lying dormant, Star
effectively has got licences to launch
four new channels.

Again why posted these if u see starting to ending posts read it carfully posts these link also updated me u r so late

ESPN name is showing up because the application for license was submitted before the Joint venture broke. ESPN is a different entity owned & controlled by Walt Disney. So ESPN is not coming back until 2015-16 or further. If Star launches more channels it'd probably be named as Star Sports5, 6 or May be SS Tamil, SS Malayali and so on.
