Something is new here.

Earlier they were not mentioning Tata Sons Pvt Ltd as their parent company. It was mentioned as a Joint Venture before.

So Tata Play is a new entity? And not for Dth service.

In the case of Tata's telecom joint venture with Japan's Docomo, they had continued to use the brand name even after Docomo had exited the joint venture, which was a clause that they had agreed upon at the time of termination of the JV and the company was known as Tata Docomo all the way up to its shutdown and sale to Airtel.
Perhaps this time UK's Sky group may not have agreed to lease the brand name on a royalty payment basis post the termination of the JV which is why Tata may have had to consider a rebranding of such a huge scale since brand recognition and loyalty is a serious concern for any company.

Brand names are Trademarked and using them in a different font or representation doesn't exempt it from that. Yes, trademarks are country-specific and not global, so a brand would need to file the trademark in every country that it wishes to protect its brand identity in. Though there is an establishment called the Madrid Protocol, where all member countries cooperate to ensure that if a trademark is registered with Madrid Protocol then it will apply to all the member countries. India joined the Madrid Protocol in 2013 and if Sky has applied for the trademark through it, then it stands valid in India as well.

Tata Sky should tread carefully in brand renaming because sometimes brand change could prove fatal. The case in example is Binaca tooth paste. Once it was a popular tooth paste brand and giving a cut throat competition to another popular brand Colgate tooth paste. It also was sponsoring a popular radio show Binaca Geet Mala in Radio Sri Lanka which was a tremendous hit show then. Suddenly, at the height of their popularity, they changed their name to Cibaca. It did not go well with the masses and slowly Cibaca brand disappeared from the market. It was thus end of the road both for Binaca toothpaste and Binaca Geet Mala.

Tata play the name does not suits for a dth service, May be it the new OTT platform that Tata going to launch like the learning platform Tata Studi
