MUMBAI: Will regional broadcaster Sun TV Network take the bold step of becoming a national player?
The shareholders want the company, which is listed on the stock exchanges, to have such an ambition. At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Chennai on Friday, they sought Sun TV Network to launch a national television channel.
While noting the point, the company management said that it cannot comment on launching such a channel as it is a strategic-led question.
On the radio front, Sun TV Network will expand its footprint as it is registering strong growth. There is potential to grow further, the company management said. It was also looking at increasing shareholder value through various businesses.
Earlier, Sun TV Network had said that it had direct and indirect investments in FM radio operations aggregating Rs 620.20 crore. The company was earlier involved in a legal dispute with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) regarding FM radio licence renewal and Phase III licensing auction.
When shareholders sought for a bonus issue or share split, the company management said it would look into it.
While the major national networks are adding channels in the southern-language market, Sun TV’s bouquet continues to be strong. In the Telugu-language market where it had slipped, it has bounced back and Gemini TV has become the No. 1 channel on the back of a slate of programming launches. Sun TV continues to dominate the Tamil market.
