Firm’s DTH customers include Airtel, Tata Sky, Sun Direct DTH
Digital surround sound is a feature we have always associated with films. However, when video is expanding to mediums beyond cinema halls, it is natural for audio to follow. As high-definition formats (HD) are becoming a craze in India, surround sound is now coming to our living rooms and beyond.

“A good picture is only half a story told,” says Pankaj Kedia, country manager of Dolby Laboratories India. So what is the other half? It is clear sound with the noise at its lowest level possible.

“Of late, we have been getting good traction from broadcasters. We have been in India for more than 30 years, but have always been associated with cinema. Slowly the market is recognising that Dolby is more than cinema. Apart from movies, our focus areas include broadcast, consumer electronics, gaming, mobile and PCs,” he said.

Eleven HD channels are on air now and 30 more are expected in 2012. Leading broadcasters and DTH operators are adding high-quality HD channels to their bouquets to enhance the viewing experience. Dolby’s DTH customers in India include Airtel, Tata Sky and Sun Direct DTH. It is in the process of tying up with three others and the deals are expected to happen early next year, he added.

“Audio has not been a focus area for broadcasters so far. They are only concentrating on picture quality. With surround sound, viewers get to hear sounds, which otherwise they would not have heard. It is an important tool to fully convey the artists’ intent to consumers,” he added.

US-based Dolby specialises in audio noise reduction and encoding/compression. The company’s products include ScreenTalk, Media Producer and Lake Processor. It has been working through its direct subsidiary in India for the past three years. Dolby is a household name but its products do not cater to end consumers.

The products and services are either sold or licenced to device manufacturers and content makers, who reach consumers. The company is the largest player in the audio processing segment, where others including DTSI and SRS Labs operate. However, Dolby is the only player that offers services across a wide spectrum of sound-related areas.
