What is the difference between Dolby Digital and Dolby digital plus?

Main difference is the compression technology. DD uses AC3 compression and DD+ uses Enhanced-AC3. Another difference is the bitrate at which the sound track is streamed. DD supports a max of 640kbps while DD+ supports up to 3mbps..

Apart from DD and DD+, we also have DD EX, DD HD, DD ProLogic, DD Live depending upon the compression and bitrates...
 
DD+ can be produced better quality sound using same band width of DD
