History TV18’s strong revenue growth leads AETN18 to turn around in FY16

MUMBAI: AETN18 Media, the 51:49 JV between TV18 and A+E Networks, has turned around in the financial year 2015-16.

The company, which owns and operates History TV18 and recently launched fyi TV18, posted net profit of Rs 6.46 million in FY16 compared to a net loss of Rs 6.29 crore (Rs 62.9 million) a year ago.

The fiscal result does not include fyi TV18, which was launched in July this year.

For a single channel network that operates in a genre like infotainment which has Discovery as the market leader, the turnaround was a significant achievement. The development is also significant considering the fact that History TV18 was a late entrant in the infotainment space as it launched in October 2011. Discovery Channel and National Geographic are among the early entrants in the market.

In FY16, total revenue grew 25% to Rs 65.94 crore (including other income of Rs 1.02 crore) compared to Rs 52.62 crore a year ago. Incidentally, revenue from operations stood at Rs 64.92 crore, up from Rs 51.88 crore.

Advertisement and subscription revenue stood at Rs 64.72 crore in FY16, which is a 26% growth over Rs 51.4 crore reported in the previous fiscal.

Revenue from sale of content fell to Rs 231,333 from Rs 3.45 million. Digital revenue grew 29.67% to Rs 1.68 million from 1.29 million.

Total expenses jumped 11% to Rs 65.29 crore in FY16 compared to Rs 58.91 crore a year ago.

In terms of cost, distribution expenses rose almost 10% to Rs 20.2 crore from Rs 18.39 crore. Marketing and promotional expenses rose to Rs 5.71 crore from Rs 5.06 crore in the trailing fiscal. Content and franchise expenses rose to Rs 4.84 crore in FY16 from Rs 4.03 crore a year ago.

History TV18, which started localisation of content with ‘OMG! Yeh Mera India’ and ‘India’s Deadliest Roads’ to grow its appeal, has been a contender for the top position challenging Discovery Channel’s hegemony over the genre.

The fiscal witnessed the launch of ‘OMG! Yeh Mera India’, one of the channel’s biggest local productions so far. The show, hosted by actor and stand-up comedian Krushna Abhishek, made its debut on 10 March.
