Discussion General Discussions, News & Updates On Indian TV Channels

Talking of English GECs, my latest article on the shutdowns of Star World and Star World Premiere HD incorporate all your points that you had discussed 3 months back. @iDJ and @dino29 bhai.
Honestly any broadcaster cannot do much in this genre. Unlike English Movies genre where there is vast possibility to sustain as there is large audience waiting to b grabbed bcoz even those not fluent in English watch films for action scenes or other such things, in English GEC there is no option as regular audience moved to OTT and new emerging audience hard to capture... The ratio of investment and outcome simply do not match up. Viacom18 too just continuing their chs to have a vibrant bouquet. All chs r struggling. If censorship rules were lenient then chances were for these chs to compete with ott
Viewership of Disney International HD and Viacom's English Channels have increased over the years as they are offering unique and fresh content. They are not shoveling MasterChef, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family etc. They are doing this since several years. When you got thousands of hours of content. If you repeat same content. No one will watch.
Star World was trying to capture emerging 1st time audience with popular old shows.... Investing in new or latest content does not work right as i have explained before hence OTT is way forward. Disney International HD still can work as it has unique content which attracts good audience but same cannot happen for mainstream English shows. Viacom18 has a big company backing it and can invest more despite less revenue from these chs but disney won't do so, they will b cautious in what they spend on and that includes sports
Please do not compare chs in other countries with situation our broadcasters r served. Also Star World Premiere has been airing various latest shows but struggling in ratings so there is no point for broadcasters to invest much in this genre. Yes, star india under Fox took wrong decisions earlier in this genre but now disney has no option but to take steps based on current scenario

Also a question related to this - As ads alone cannot deliver on revenue, how many subscribers r willing to pay high subscription cost for premium chs to watch favourite content. This when it will b censored and u can watch same uncut on ott which is now available in smart tv or boxes. All in all English or premium content has new destination
Star World Premiere was doing just fine as premium channel until they decided to make it a regular English GEC. First channel that full adapted to airing shows within 24 hours of US airing at a time when broadband internet penetration was almost non existent. It was serving it's purpose. It would've succeed more if they had a SD feed of it as in 2013 many didn't had HD TVs and service provider carry HD channels. Meanwhile FX had different and better offering. There was so much demand for FX. They had to launch HD feed. They sacrificed both channels for the sake of more sports when most time their existing channels were airing repeats which will be the fate of Star Sports 1 HD Tamil as well. Fox Crime was turn into a rerun channel. Hence, failed.

If broadcaster doesn't offer new content. Why should customers be expected to pay? How are Viacom's channels making money? They offer something fresh every month. Even Zee is trying something new with Korean content. What is Star doing to attract viewers or generate revenues? They should now go sip coffee with Karan Johar. It's done and dusted.

Now waiting for them to pull trigger on their only successful GEC Disney International HD which they have cleverly not put under any bouquet.
Disney International HD primarily caters to teen or younger audience and they schedule content accordingly. It is clubbed under English GEC but has younger audience base

Star World tried a lot last year to infuse new energy in it but sadly audience response was dampening. Comedy Central or Zee Cafe r also not performing well if u look at number of ads there, just that a stronger financial backing from parent company can somehow sustain a channel but it cannot b called successful on financial front. Disney/star has made so many shows popular in India be it on tv or ott so not right to say that they have not done anything great. U know world over broadcasters r switching off tv chs and making OTT the go to destination, this trend catching up in niche channel space in India

SWP HD doing fab job in current situation, it does air many latest shows and other popular content. U should instead b appreciative in this case understanding dynamics of operating English GEC presently n market like India
