The Sports Cluster of Sony Pictures Network India (SPN) launches its ‘Heartbreaks Await’ campaign ahead of the upcoming semi-finals and finals of the Emirates FA Cup, the oldest recognized football tournament in the world. Currently in its 136th edition, the stakes are sky high with some of the biggest clubs in English football making it to the semi-finals and competing to win the prestigious title.

MIB warns news channels against airing promotional programmes in garb of news items

News channels have been warned by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) against airing promotional programmes in the garb of regular news items.

“It has come to the notice of the Ministry that some TV channels are indulging in telecasting the advertisements/promotional programmes including those of Institutions/Organizations offering educational/financial solutions or solutions for medical problems, etc. which are masqueraded as news items thereby misleading audience,” the MIB said in a recent advisory to the channels.

Some news channels tend to air such programmes as “exclusive” or “live interview” with the management representatives of the organisations.

Test cricket to be shown in Ultra HD for first time on Sky Sports

MUMBAI: Sky Sports will show Test cricket in Ultra HD this summer when England take on South Africa in their Test series across July and August.

In a world first for Test cricket, Sky Q customers in the UK and Ireland can look forward to every ball of England’s Test series against South Africa in stunning Ultra HD with picture quality four times that of HD TV.

The four Test matches against South Africa form part of Sky’s biggest ever summer of sport and will be shown exclusively live throughout July and August. The multi camera coverage, available with Sky Q, will be supported by stunning Ultra HD graphics, Hawkeye and enhanced statistical offerings.

Sky Sports head of cricket Bryan Henderson commented, “With Ultra HD, customers can enjoy the four Test matches, with four times better picture quality and four times greater clarity. It is a first for Sky Sports and we can’t wait to bring you closer to the action, excitement and drama that the South Africa Test series will deliver this summer.”

Madras HC bars Sun TV from using Sony Music songs without permission

MUMBAI: In a new order, the Madras High Court directed Sun TV Network not to use Sony Music songs without prior approval.

Sony Music had filed a petition in the HC alleging that Sun TV was using a number of its songs without licence.
The company had sent a cease and desist notice to Sun TV on 27 July last year after an exchange of letters between the two parties and meetings between their counsellors had failed to yield any result.

Sony Music also alleged that, in response to one of its letters, the southern broadcaster had stated that “it was the absolute copyright holder of films under the South Indian BSE 6.24% Cinematograph Films ”.

ZEEL enters Poland with customised Zee.One channel

MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has expanded its footprint in Europe with its foray into Poland.
ZEEL will shortly launch a specially customised version of Zee.One, its dedicated Bollywood film and entertainment channel for Polish audiences.

The company has appointed Pawel Kolasa as country manager for Poland. He will report to ZEE Network Europe CEO Neeraj Dhingra.

Zee.One, a film and entertainment channel, promises to bring top-quality Bollywood content specially customised for Polish audiences. The channel will feature high-budget movies and series including action films, thrillers, comedies and musicals. The programming line-up will also include lifestyle programmes inspired by Indian culture on topics such as culinary, travel and yoga.

ZEEL to shift CFO Mihir Modi to Margo Networks, plans scale up of tech start-up

MUMBAI: After acquiring 80% stake in Mumbai-based Margo Networks, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has decided to guide the operational functions of the technology start-up. ZEEL will be moving its chief financial officer (CFO) Mihir Modi to spearhead the subsidiary company, a source familiar with the development said. Margo, which has the technology to help boost digital content consumption, will be scaled up significantly. ZEEL has acquired 80% stake in Margo Networks for Rs 75 crore

21st Century Fox outlook on Star bullish despite $30m DeMon hit

MUMBAI: Though India’s currency demonetisation late last year with ripple effects of currency shortage spilling over in 2017 hit businesses all round, including the likes of Star, its parent 21 Century Fox has pinned high hopes on the OTT platform Hotstar and the overall ability of Star to overcome short-term hiccups because of market dominance.

Terming the demonisation move of PM Modi-led government in New Delhi a “crazy speed bump” that hit businesses all round, 21st Century Fox CFO John Nallen, in a conversation with investment analysts at a conference last month, admitted that Star too got “affected” from last quarter 2016 to first quarter 2017 calendar year. He revealed at that time that Star India took a hit of almost $30 million, and the company expects that things would start looking up mid-March 2017 onwards.
