Great that Sony bagged back the TV rights for IPL. So the nostalgic days if IPL are gonna be back again. Sony will surely air some matches on Sony Max though it'll be aired on Sony Ten. Watching back IPL on Sony Max is something which makes me very happy. Their channels' PQ will be great to watch IPL. Also, since their channels are available on Jio TV, we can watch it even on that platform.

Viacom18 grabbing the digital rights is somewhat a boon for them. Where many of us speculated Viacom18 to grab the TV rights as well, good that they at least bought the digital rights. Again, it's a loss to Sports18 1 which was launched recently. So it is officially Sony-Zee and Viacom18 now.

I will be the happiest person if the IPL indeed returns to Sony, which is its rightful home. Sony will restore the glory that was lost when Star took it. I hope Extraaa Innings T20 is relaunched with all the glamour and spectacle that it had until 2017, and I hope Gaurav Kapur at least will return to it.

However, as far as Viacom18 winning the digital rights is concerned, I am not so sure it will be as beneficial for Voot as it is a loss for Sports18. If Sports18 got the IPL it would have resulted in a tremendous increase in the popularity of the channel. SonyLIV is used to showing sports whereas Voot has so far had only niche sports and whether or not it can handle the IPL’s massive traffic like Disney+ Hotstar did is a big question mark.

Either way, Disney Star has lost big, as it couldn’t keep either the digital or the satellite rights in India. But it is obviously a blessing in disguise since it can now focus on ICC, BCCI or other more important things. Ultimately the BCCI is laughing all the way to the bank by earning tens of thousands of crores.

True. Even i loved the IPL presentation of Sony. Infact i was so interested to watch Extraaa Innings each day rather than IPL Matches. Gaurav Kapur and others will surely be back, let's see if they get popular names on the panelist list or not. I hope Sidhu Paaji is also part of the panel. They will surely deliver best preparation though again production cost will go up and they will keep a check on it. We will also get to see IPL being aired in 16:9 video aspect ratio of Sony Sports channels unless ofcourse they modify strategy and air it in 4:3 SD aspect ratio in order to have more subscribers opt for HD channels .

Voot will b able to deliver a nice experience for IPL, they may not have much experience in handling streaming big/popular sporting events but surely they r putting in place an experienced team and will invest more in tech upgradation to provide best streaming experience for subscribers. Also viacom18 will surely try to bag BCCI home matches rights alongwith other cricket board rights so that Sports18 has a rich portfolio of sports properties soon which will appeal to vast spectrum of audience

Star /disney is not any loss by not winning IPL rights. They knew it is not financially viable to spend big amount on it as well they can perform really well on TV and OTT medium without IPL too. Also all these years they got so many complaints about cricket overdose across Star Sports channels but they had option but to continue that strategy as heavy investment was made in buying rights which needed ways to best monetize them. By not going overboard in buying IPL rights star/disney has made right decision on finance front as well as they will now b able to divert resources in bringing quality sports content across their channels.

Also now some of the sports channels might b shut down and star/disney will publish the New NTO 2.0 compliant RIO very soon.

Another thing which i am interested to see is what strategy EuroSports or 1Sports will take. Will they shut down, tie up a major broadcaster or be acquired by someone.

Now that Disney Star has officially lost the IPL media rights, Approximately Rs 5,500 crore ( as per the latest report by Best Media Info ) will be wiped out from its annual revenues but the market leader will also have to re-draw it’s plans for the Indian market. The network made IPL revenues 3 times bigger than what it was five years back. I feel it’s time for ESPN comeback in the Indian subcontinent with an fresh content strategy with graphics that we all crave for!

Considering Disney Star have saved tons of money, I can see them making some bold moves across genres!

Revenue may be good but if u count in investment made for rights then all the costs involved in production, promotion and many other things then this revenue does not seem to generate any major profit for star/disney

It just didn’t make financial sense for Disney to shell out billions for cricket to keep subscribers who basically get the service for free and drag down the ARPU. Hopefully the inevitable subscribers losses will be counteracted by Disney+ launching in 50 new countries. The highest average monthly revenue per user that Disney has disclosed for Disney+ Hotstar since it was launched in April 2020 was $1.03, in the first quarter of this year. The company has said in several quarterly and annual financial reports that revenue per user from India has been a drag on overall revenue for Disney+. Subscribers in other countries excluding India, generated an average of $6.35 in ARPU.

Buddy, all the apps u r getting bundled in mobile, broadband or with other things they r being provided free or at discounted rates to u but the concerned operator is paying subscription amount for same to star / disney . Also ARPU for disney+hotstar may b low as in India ads drive more revenue compared to subscription but the massive subscriber base Disney got thru their OTT platform in India lead to drastic increase in valuation of company. You cannot compare data of foreign countries with India as both work on different business models

I totally agree on that. IPL was never profitable for Star at all, it's just that they were strong enough to sustain those losses. The thing i like about Disney regime that they play it safe unlike 21st Century FOX / Murdoch era.

I know that but after Netflix’s rough 6 months investors are starting to focus more on cash flow rather than just subscriber numbers. I still think IPL would be a boost for Disney but at what cost? Infact Disney should least care about Indian streaming market considering it's not a big deal yet.
