I will be the happiest person if the IPL indeed returns to Sony, which is its rightful home. Sony will restore the glory that was lost when Star took it. I hope Extraaa Innings T20 is relaunched with all the glamour and spectacle that it had until 2017, and I hope Gaurav Kapur at least will return to it.
However, as far as Viacom18 winning the digital rights is concerned, I am not so sure it will be as beneficial for Voot as it is a loss for Sports18. If Sports18 got the IPL it would have resulted in a tremendous increase in the popularity of the channel. SonyLIV is used to showing sports whereas Voot has so far had only niche sports and whether or not it can handle the IPL’s massive traffic like Disney+ Hotstar did is a big question mark.
Either way, Disney Star has lost big, as it couldn’t keep either the digital or the satellite rights in India. But it is obviously a blessing in disguise since it can now focus on ICC, BCCI or other more important things. Ultimately the BCCI is laughing all the way to the bank by earning tens of thousands of crores.
If Star loses TV rights and won digital rights thn its win win situation for thm....tv viewership had fallen this time and digital viewership will increase every year.
Good Point. TV viewership has had a fall over last few years (based on what i read and comparing cumulative data) so advertisers r already apprehensive of spending high amount of money for buying ad spots.
Sony has paid a whopping amount for TV rights and it will b huge challenge for them to break even or think about a way to generate some profit. Some unique strategy will have to be brought in to assure advertisers that buying ad spots at extremely high rates will b beneficial for them, also they will have to build audience interest first which is again major challenge. Star/disney is better in designing such strategies as they have large presence across genres or on the vertical front too and they leverage all possible things quite efficiently, Sony will face a tough challenge doing so.
Also as i have said that i just hope this does not lead cutting investment made for their channels in other genres as that will again lead to major problem. Star / Disney is in comfortable position, without IPL too their linear channels as well as OTT platform will continue to perform extremely well.
I think star/disney will try to get Package C rights
Now that Disney Star has officially lost the IPL media rights, Approximately Rs 5,500 crore ( as per the latest report by Best Media Info ) will be wiped out from its annual revenues but the market leader will also have to re-draw it’s plans for the Indian market. The network made IPL revenues 3 times bigger than what it was five years back. I feel it’s time for ESPN comeback in the Indian subcontinent with an fresh content strategy with graphics that we all crave for!
Considering Disney Star have saved tons of money, I can see them making some bold moves across genres!
Now again thousands of subscriptions will have to be taken. Separate for Australia tour, separate for West Indies tour, separate for IPL, separate for home
These days already operators or even DTH operators or thru other things one gets free OTT or discounted OTT subscription. Do not worry ur bills won't go that high. Infact viacom18 may even provide a IPL for Free on voot/jio to attract more subscribers and earn revenue.... Paid subscription viewers might get some added benefits. Also i think Tata Play, Airtel XStream app users will get free access to IPL premium feed

It just didn’t make financial sense for Disney to shell out billions for cricket to keep subscribers who basically get the service for free and drag down the ARPU. Hopefully the inevitable subscribers losses will be counteracted by Disney+ launching in 50 new countries. The highest average monthly revenue per user that Disney has disclosed for Disney+ Hotstar since it was launched in April 2020 was $1.03, in the first quarter of this year. The company has said in several quarterly and annual financial reports that revenue per user from India has been a drag on overall revenue for Disney+. Subscribers in other countries excluding India, generated an average of $6.35 in ARPU.
Congratulate sony and hope more hd channels and want to see ipl in bengali language in hd. Ipl before not telecasted in star in bengali language in hd channel.again congratulated sony.
