Chennai, Jul 5: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to secure Digital Addressable System (DAS) licence for the state run TV Cable Corporation that was pending with the Centre for about three years.

In a letter to Modi, the contents of which were released to the press here, Jayalalithaa pointed out that the previous UPA regime sanctioned licenses to nine Multi System Operators in Tamil Nadu, but did not respond to the state's plea. She reiterated that her government revived the 'defunct' Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV), a state run TV Cable Corporation after coming to power in 2011 to adhere to its commitment to provide inexpensive and quality Cable TV services.

"Even as TACTV's applications for licenses were kept pending by the previous UPA Government, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued licenses to nine other Multi System Operators in Tamil Nadu, including those who applied after TACTV," she charged in her letter. TACTV, an initiative of the previous DMK government at the height of family feud in the party's first family involving M Karunanidhi and his grandnephews, Maran brothers, was however later put in cold storage after they patched up.

TACTV was providing 100 channels for Rs 70 as against the Rs 150-250 charged by some other Multi-System Operators, she said. After the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 was amended, paving way for DAS, TACTV took steps to commence operations in the digital mode in Chennai and applied to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for DAS license.

Orders were also placed for the supply of Set Top Boxes, Conditional Access System and Subscriber Management System and erection of Head End at a cost of about Rs 50 crores, she told Modi. As per the provisions of the Cable TV Network (Regulations) Act, 1995, and Rules thereof, TACTV is qualified for such a licence, he asserted and alleged that it strongly suspected that the non-issuance of license to by the previous UPA Government was only to facilitate particular private business interests.

Jayalithaa said in her letter that she had already brought this issue to the Prime Minister's notice in her memorandum she submitted to him last month on various matters concerning Tamil Nadu including for setting up of Cauvery Management Board.

Exactly on 5th July TN CM wrote letter to PM requesting for DAS license for Arasu at the earliest and its more than a month now and still the same situations continue and no signal from Central Govt if the license will be issued or not.

Will we get Arasu by Aug 15th (Indian Independence Day)??
Will we get Arasu by Deepavali (23 Oct 2014)??
Will we get Arasu by 2015 New Year??
Why cant Arasu enter Chennai with the all working CAS license (as per ex-telecom minister Manish Tewari)??
Will at-least the current MSO go DAS by 2015 New Year??

NO IDEA!!! :-/

Do you already have an STB?

If possible please check with your LCO and get some replies for these q's?

Will your LCO sell STB at this point of time?
What will be refund policy if we pay for an STB and some other MSO enters within the next 6 months?

Stb s not like mobile number portability.... didn't broadscters use different technlogies... current trai s not considering that....

But in US this system s already in place....

Today TN CM announced this.

Internet service? Any update on when they will start their cable service in Chennai?

We just lost hope on Arasu and struck without a proper alternative.

So TN Govt to provide internet services through Arasu cable.

Is it possible to provide some analog channels, digital cable services and broadband services together? (Need answer from a technical person)

It makes us to think that Arasu won't start digital cable services sooner and going to start focus on Internet service & analog cable only..

Then what's the fate of digitisation in TN?

Arasu going to provide broadband service by a tie-up with Private ISP who has a ISP license to operate.

Then why can't Arasu run a digital cable service similarly having a Private MSO Tie-up who has DAS license..?.

If TN govt really have 110% intention to provide a digital cable service, then no one can stop it.

Yes, you are right.

First they can use CAS license to supply and seed STB, and if really necessary then they can easily tie-up or purchase an MSO with DAS license, there are many MSO's in TN that got DAS license and not operating, there are also MSO's from north India which don't operate from Chennai but has DAS license for Chennai and they would be glad to share their license for some profit.

But all these are necessary only if they intend to provide cable service to Chennai otherwise we can keep blaming the license issue as long as we wish.

Thambidurai becomes Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker. Will this bring DAS license for Arasu to serve Chennai or will Arasu still drag its best (already successful dragging for the last 3 years) till next state (2016) or national (2019) elections?
