MIB issues 9 TV channel licences and cancels 2 in Dec; Sony Pix 2 HD gets nod

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has awarded nine and cancelled two TV channel licences in December, taking the total permitted TV channels in India to 899.

The nine channels have been awarded non-news uplinking licences. The two cancelled licences include news and a non-news channel.
Sony Pictures Networks India has received a licence for Sony Pix 2 HD. It had earlier received licence under Sony Pix 2.

Essel Group-owned Living Entertainment Enterprises Ltd has received licences for Living Flavourz, Living Travelz, Living Rootz and Z Living.

Shop CJ Network has received licences to launch Shop CJ Tamil and Shop CJ Telugu.
Multi-system operator (MSO) Kerala Communicators Cable Ltd. (KCCL) has received a licence under the name Kerala Vision. Mass Telecasting has got a licence under the channel name MT.

Two TV channel licences cancelled
Besides granting licences, the MIB has also cancelled two TV channel licences.

The ministry has cancelled the licences of TVC Sky Shop and Real Video Impact. TVC Sky Shop had a non-news licence TVC Online, while Real Video Impact had a news licence TV New.

The number of TV channel licences cancelled so far has gone up to 155.




Total permitted TV channels stand at 899
As on 31 December 2016, the MIB has granted permission to 1,054 channels. Of these, the permission of 155 channels has been cancelled.

The total permitted TV channels stand at 899. These include 399 news and 500 non-news channels.

In November 2016, the ministry had issued three non-news licences to Sony Pictures Networks India, Yelamanchili TV, and Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel for Sony Pix 2, Yone TV, and SVBC 2.

The ministry had also cancelled Navda Creations’ non-news licence under the name Navda.

It also had to restore the licences of STV Enterprises and Mahuaa Media following a stay order from Delhi High Court.

STV’s four news uplinking licences, namely Punjab Today, STV Jammu Kashmir News, STV Haryana News, and STV UP News, were restored, while Mahuaa Media’s three news licences, namely Mahuaa, Mahuaa News and First India, and two non-news licences, Mahuaa Music and Mahuaa Movies, were restored.
