The Indian Government will not implement a regulatory structure for mobile television as the available spectrum is below requirement, parliament has been told.
In response to a question by MPs Sanjeev Ganesh Naik and Supriya Sule, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni has told Lok Sabha: "The ministry could not put in place a regulatory framework for mobile TV service due to non-availability of adequate spectrum in the UHF Band V (585-698 MHz)."
At least 96MHz spectrum had been marked as necessary for mobile TV services across India, she said. "However, according to India Remark (IND 37) in the National Frequency Allocation Plan 2011, the requirement of spectrum for Doordarshan's digitalisation programme and mobile mobile TV services are to be met in the UHF Band V," Soni added.
Doordarshan has projected it will require 64MHz within this band for digitising its public television network the Minister said, adding: "Therefore, the available spectrum for mobile TV services is far below the requirement."
Doordarshan has been conducting pilot mobile TV services in Delhi since 2007, Soni disclosed.
"Mobile TV signals can be received on DVB-H enabled [devices] within a range of about 10km from Akashvani Bhawan, Parliament Street, New Delhi where the transmitter is located," she told MPs.
