If you don't want to miss out on your favourite daily soap, movies, news and views programmes or sports events, better ensure that a Set Top Box (STB) has been installed to your cable network before March 31.

Cable operators in the city are already in the process of installing STB at homes of their subscribers for continuous viewing of satellite channels. Patna is one of the 38 cities (over 10 lakh population) in which conditional access system (CAS) or in simpler words digitization of cable TV network has to be put into effect before April 1.

The digitized transmissions will enable viewers to watch high definition (HD) pictures and high definition digital sound quality. "We have already installed STBs at most of our subscriber's homes and the remaining connections will be covered before March end," said a local operator Rakesh Kumar. "The range of the STB available with us starts from Rs 1,000 and the HD boxes go up to Rs 2,500. However, HD boxes are currently not much in demand in the city," said another local cable TV network operator, adding that the monthly rent would be the same as earlier.

However, subscribers, having single cable connection for more than one television, will not be able to enjoy different channels on different TV sets simultaneously. To overcome this technical limitation, local operators have come up with discount offers for subscribers who would install more than one STB.

Many people are also doing away with cable connections and migrating to DTH (Direct to Home) services. "I was already planning to go for a DTH service since my cable connection used to be very erratic. And with digitization now being made compulsory in two-tier cities, I thought it was more sensible to go for a DTH connection," said Rita Kumari, a homemaker residing in Kurji. She added, "My husband has a transferable job. So, if I got to some other town I would be able to take the DTH box with me."

The demand for DTH boxes has also gone up in the last couple of months. "Quite a few people have come inquiring about DTH connections and the sale has also slightly gone up since January. People carefully compare the prizes and services offered by both connections before making their choice," said Sanjay Singh, an electronics good shop owner near Dak Bungalow roundabout.

While digitization was made compulsory in metropolitan cities in October last, remaining urban areas of the country should implement CAS by September 30, 2013, according to the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Act, 2011. In rural areas it would be implemented after that.
