FTA or Free To Air Channels are those which are broadcasted unencrypted. The channel broadcaster/dth operator uplinks the channel signal to a satellite as is. If you have a satellite dish and a unlocked Set Top Box you can tap into that satellite and catch the channel. This is similar to catching doordarshan signals by placing an antenna on top of the house.

But, all paid channels and the ones transmitted by dth operators are not meant to be received free. They encrypt the signals and transmit. Unless you know how to decode the signal, you cannot watch the channel. That is the work of the dth operator's set top box.
