Delhi-based news channel jumps the gun

Srinagar, Mar 13: Barely minutes after militants attacked a CRPF camp at Bemina on the Srinagar outskirts, a Delhi-based news channel, Times Now, jumped the gun and reported ‘5 school children killed’ in the attack—something which immediately drew flak from netizens and observers.

While the officiating Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Range), Abdul Gani Mir, addressed media-persons quickly near the encounter site and categorically stated that the Police Public School—near which the incident took place—was “shut and no school children were injured in the attack,” the Delhi-based channel continued to run the false ticker (see picture) on the death of school children, evoking widespread criticism. “Is there any law in India under which this channel can be tried for spreading lies in broad daylight? Wouldn’t nation want to know?” wrote a Facebook user, Dr Rouf, on his Wall.
Another FB user was quick to share the link and write: “What kind of journalism is this? Pity! Just few minutes after the attack, police said it was an attack on peace and not the school, how could the Channel spread such a lie? It must be banned by all.” Interestingly, a number of journalists working for news channels took an exception to this misreporting, which sparked off panic across the Valley. “During the 2010 unrest, police registered a case against a TV news channel News X and its reporters for running incorrect news about the death of a person in police firing in Pulwama. The FIR was filed in police station Pulwama. Why hasn’t police taken a note of this serious aberration this time?” asked a local journalist. “In Kashmir, local news channels were banned in 2010 on charges of misreporting while newspapers are targeted every now and then on petty issues.”
When contacted, the Senior Superintendent of Police (Srinagar) Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari said, “We have taken note of the Times Now report and we are going to register a case against the channel. The matter will be investigated.”
